Actually there are cicada swarms almost every summer but from different broods, so most people have heard cicadas and many people hear them every year.Individual colonies swarm only once every 17 years but others swarm on alternate years. This years predicted swarm by brood 2 is expected to be larger than many other swarms but not unprecedented. Many parts of the NYC metropolitan area won't even hear them because parts of the area are not in the swarm zone.
When my kids were younger ,these things were all over our pecan tree, now and then. I would catch one, and get a very light, very long piece of thread, and tie it around the middle of the cicada, or locust, as we called them. The kids would walk around with the locust flying high above them, and have a blast. The longer the thread, the higher they would fly. My youngest kids would hold the locust by the middle, and with the wings beating furiously, fan themselves on those hot Texas summer days. It was like your own personal fan. Hey, country folks look for entertainment where they can find it, I guess.
Seventeen years ago I waited in anticipation. I searched and searched and searched and never saw one.
I hope they put on a show this time becasue I may not get another chance.
