GANGS OF NEW YORK

THEY prey on high-school students, second-generation immigrants who want protection or a sense of identity.

And they boast on their YouTube and MySpace pages - posting pictures and detailing their exploits.

As New York's gang population swells to more than 15,000, membership is increasingly Hispanic - spurred by a wave of street toughs from Mexico - and younger.

Gang street crime surged 37 percent between fiscal years 2005 and 2007 - to 713 incidents, from 520 - according to police statistics cited in the Mayor's 2006-2007 Management Report.

GANGS OF NEW YORK

( I wish I could post the whole article. It has information on the top 10 Gangs of New York.)

Cigarette and fedora?

hmmmm. But don't say anything to slur the Hispanics, Asians, Caribs. It's only the few of them that do this. NY has the all time handy default of 1920s Eyerish and Eyetalians to propagandize and stigmatize blame. Those groups won't mind, it's all of them that fit a stereotype. They're Euro descent. <sarcasm>

This is why they'll never eradicate or miminize these problems, some groups will often deflect to others, and their support groups will call upon the ACLU, La Raza, and the like to ensure there is no victimization for them, just victimize other groups.

NYC's gang population is undercounted. Severely. NYC is a major gang city due to it's poverty, diversity, and segregation. There are also many drug gangs that fall below the radar and small block based gangs. That count also does not include inactive members. However the biggest thing in NYC today is large gangs like DDP, Trinitario, Blood, Crip. In the past gangs in NYC were small and based out of neighborhoods. In the 70's, 80's and early 90's these gangs became the small time drug crews that brought NYC's homicide count into the 2200's. Today most youth are part of large "nations" with members in the hundred thousands nation wide.

The gang related killing has just begun among the Latino gangs. The gang populations in the city are growing very quickly. DDP and Trinitario have exploded.

Biggest gang in NYC is the UBN. They have lost power but they are still on top. They were at their peak in the mid to late 90s. Mostly Black.

The Crips have especially exploded in Brooklyn and areas with a lot of Black Caribbean immigrants like the Northeast Bronx, East Flatbush, ect. Virtually non existant 7 years ago. Mostly Black.

The Trinitarios and DDP's have exploded in NYC and the metro area as a whole. Especially the city and the Jersey side of the river. The war between them only gets worse as the days pass. Mostly in Manhattan and the Bronx. Both were formed in NYC and are overwhelmingly of Dominican membership.

Latin Kings took a huge hit with the fall of King Tone. Gang lacks leadership and has not been making noise. Mostly small time drug rings and things like that. Mostly Puerto Rican.

And the FBI wastes our tax money and resources busting up a bunch of geriatric Italians running a bookmaking operation. Gang members should be prosecuted under the RICO statute.

Maybe if they had a vowel at the end of their name the FBI would care.

The FBI spent over $80 million dollars going after JOhn Gotti Jr. three times (they are contemplating a fourth).

Do you feel any safer?

I agree with everything he says, just adding Crips are real big in Queens too and part of the reason bloods have grown so much is because a lot of hispanics have begun to join over the last few years.

Their are a lot of gang laws in place. Read Don Diva they always keep you informed on new legislation related to hood stuff. The problem with gangs is more of juveniles. Hustling is not necessarily a gang problem, but violent crime in many instances is. The problem with that is most of the violent crime is committed by juveniles who are trying to prove themselves and its always tricky how we should prosecute juveniles. It is always going to be difficult to eliminate gangs. To be honest many of us are in no position to speak to children about gangs as we have allowed ourselves to be controlled by some group in some way, shape or form (churches, fraternities etc). Trust me this is probably the most complex facet in law enforcement

The gangs of 50+ years ago were far worse than any of these gangs in the city today. Back then the Mafia, Irish Street thugs, and Jewish Mobs were running the city, and controlled every facet of life for residents. The cops, firemen, city officials were all on the take or just too afraid to do anything..and for good reason..since they were unstoppable for the most part. Those gangs were far deadlier, more organized, entrenched, mainstream, and powerful than the mostly outer-edge teenager and 20 something kids today.

This is not to underestimate the current gang situation that exists today, however it is to put it in perspective. What you see today is a far cry from the hell the city went through back then...I will take the gangs in the city today anyday. There will always be a gang presence...these types of associations are a part of human nature. However, gangs in this city, for the most part, are not a part of daily life for a majority of residents...the same cannot be said of the gang presence of the past.
