While NYC has tons of supermarkets, and even some Costcos, unfortunately not all neighborhoods are created alike..

There's a Morton Williams on Park Ave S between 21 and 22 on the west side of the street. There's a K-Mart down on Astor Place that has cleaning stuff. Garden of Eden on 23rd is a great place to buy produce, spices, cheese, the list goes on.

Couple years. There's a bunch of stuff planned in that area.

There's a Stop and Shop in Long Island City but it's not that convenient unless you have a car.
Stop & Shop - Astoria - Long Island City, NY

Don't know if it's near you but there was an Associated supermarket on 41st. Not going to be huge but it's your basic NYC supermarket. If you want the huge ones, you generally need a car.

OP, your problem is that LIC is not a residential *neighborhood*. It is a somewwhat faded commerical business area, which because of its proximity to Manhattan and relatively lower real property costs (particularly in light of the recent boom), has become fertile ground for hotel and residential investment, intended as an alternative to higher cost Manhattan.

While there has been considerble investment in recent years, there has been little in the way of necessary amenities, such as supermarkets and the like. That is one of the negatives to living in LIC.

There are LOTS of supermarkets in NYC, but not many in commercial areas. They are normally found in traditional residential areas.

****

Without knowing your specific location, the nearest supermarkets w/b:

Food Cellar 4-85 47th Road, Hunters Point

Food Cellar | Naturals and Organics

Foodcellar & Co. Market - Hunters Point - Long Island City, NY

Super Stop & Shop
35-51 48th Street, right off Northern Blvd., near Woodside

Stop & Shop - Astoria - Long Island City, NY

Most like what you want!

You can get there by Bus Q66, but I'm sure at least one other; and by subway "7" train, not sure of the stop, but it is the closest to White Castle. Bit of a walk down from the train though.

Costco
32-50 Vernon Blvd.

Costco - Astoria - Long Island City, NY

You could come into Astoria, where you'll find typical neighborhood commercial districts with supermarkets, discount stores, and all manner of stores.

Take the "N" train to either Broadway, 30th Avenue, or Ditmars, supermarkets are all within 1 to 2 blocks of the station.

Also, there is always Fresh Direct which will *deliver* and consequently is goo for buying bulk.

I suggest you take public transport, along with a short walk to most of the above. Then take a taxi back home with your goods.

Lastly, if shopping in Manhattan is more appealing, I suggest the Union Square Park are to be convenient, in that there is a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and a Food Emporium, all within a block of the subway! Both WF and Traders are madhouses, very crowded!

Btw, stay out of the damn Bodegas! You want a pack of gum cigarettes, a soda, a beer, a water? That's what they are good for, nothing else!! Think of them as 7/11s, you wouldn't buy groceries there, would you?

Or take the 7 to the R two stops and get off at Grand ave.

Bus takes a half hour, and subway can be less or more depending on how long you have to wait.

LIC is developing so there isn't a whole lot of "Big" stuff there. I'm sure in a year or two a bigger type store that you are looking for will show up.
Take the Q60 along Queens Blvd and get off in Rego Park in front of Rego Center (where the Sears is, the corner of 63rd Drive/63rd Road). You can also take the R subway train to the 63rd Drive/Rego Park stop. Go to the Rego Center II (on the block behind Rego Center) and there is a ALDI which a low-priced supermarket chain. Also in Rego Center II one can find Costco if you are a member. Also you can find on 63rd Drive within a couple blocks a MET supermarket and a much larger Keyfood supermarket. On the other side which is 63rd Rd (the same side as Rego Center) one can find another supermarket (I think it is MET) 2 blocks off of Queens Blvd.
