Hi all,
Am new here, but after reading some of the threads on this forum, I am hopeful someone can help me out.
My daughter has been accepted at Teachers College (!) - and she, her dog, and her friend plan to move to NYC soon. We live in Maine - and we are hoping to get some showings set up - and then come down at the end of April for a few days to look at apartments.
Problem is I am not sure going through Craigslist alone is good. They're looking for a safe place with 2 bedrooms near the No. 1 train, and can pay up to $2200. That being said, should we go with a broker?
Does anyone know of a good, honest broker that we might call to explain the situation and hopefully set up apartment showing? It is so confusing going through reviews, etc.
Believe me, your help and advice would be much appreciated!
Meg
Manhattanville, especially Convent. Only Convent ...?
I would basically avoid St. Nicholas Terrace but ... there are a couple of good buildings, one on 128th and St. N. Terrace.
One of the buildings - Wonderful 3 Bedroom/Amazing Price!!!
Another apartment: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/abo/3678158426.html
They have back shared terraces, light, good appliances, normal tenants.
There are two more, one on 129th I think also.
I would not consider living east of St. Nicholas Park, except the school building, which seldom has vacancies anyway.
I never lived in the Columbia-owned apartment options but I heard from colleagues that they were expensive and not as good as the private buildings.
Avoid (as in "like the plague") the buildings owned by Singer on Morningside Avenue. There are actually few rentals there other than his buildings.
3333 Broadway ... could be a risk. There are bedbugs and resident challenges.
Holy Cow! You folks are a God-Send to me! I so appreciate each of your replies, very helpful advice. Don't have time to respond to each of you separately at the moment, but I truly want to thank you all. Each little bit of help is useful! I am from Brooklyn originally - but moved up here to Maine 11 years ago. Left NY because my family had moved up here to Maine and I couldn't afford private schools in NY when my girl was little. I will always be a native New Yorker though - and I am hoping to be able to move back maybe in a year or so. Miss the falafels and the friendly people on the subways - though I thought I'd never miss the subways! But, all of your advice is much appreciated!, Meg
Forgot to add - places listed under "gonofee" never allow pets, reason enough alone to completely boycott them, and I have heard that they are truly awful management-wise.
Hi Harlem Resident, Thank you for sending me the listings and advice! Both could be a consideration and I thank you profusely. I will also heed your advice about no to east of St. Nicholas Blvd. and no building by Singer or 3333 Bway. This is just the type of info I had hoped for -- I so appreciate it. Warm Regards, Meg
Thanks so much, will def check into Convent more. So good to know that alot of people have dogs, too! Warmest regards to you, Meg
