Ok, so I grew up in the neighborhood and still frequent HB because I have family there. We go to Lenny's Clam bar often and let me say, there's always black people at Lenny's. But you're not going to be living in Lenny's, are you? The reality is, yes, there are black people that GO to HB but are there black people who LIVE in HB? If there are, I haven't seen any. Ever. But the neighboring areas are pretty mixed and safe. I lived in Ozone Park my entire life until I got married. It's a safe area. Other things to consider--HB, whether it's the old or new side, is VERY expensive and both sides are prone to flooding. There have been floods before Hurricane Sandy. I have family and friends who got flooded just from heavy rains because the canal rises. And like someone else said, it's very noisy. And if you're not close to Crossbay, you can forget walking to any stores. I would look into the North Flushing/Whitestone/Bayside areas. Lots of Italians and mixed cultures and safe.

If you're not opposed to moving to Long Island, come to Franklin Square. We're pretty much all Italian

Hello and thanks for the response. Ok so in your opinion my wife would probably feel left out in HB? Also as I have stated we have to mixed children. How are the schools with bi racial kids as far as students? I heard that Ozone Park is not the same anymore. As far as crime and Italians. Is that true because if so may not be a place for us. What are the rental prices like in bayside/whitestone? No I am not against LI. what is it like in Franklin Square? Population? Italian %? Rental prices?

HB is about 85-90% white. Do you think she'll feel left out? Ozone Park is definitely not the same. There are still some Italians but not the population it used to have. It's mostly Guyanese. I only suggested it if you were looking for something more along the lines of a mixed community. There have been some robberies since they opened the casino, but they were closer to the casino. The schools aren't fantastic and they're overcroweded. There are too many multi-dwelling homes.

Bayside/Whitestone you're looking at $1500 and up for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. The schools though are very good.

Franklin Square reminds me of how Ozone Park used to be growing up. It borders Elmont and North Valley Stream so there's no culture shock. I own my home so I have no idea what the rents are but it is a very good school district.

Not completely sure, but you may not find what you want looking to live in a neighborhood full of Italians in the NYC area. Italian-Americans have been here for generations at some extent have formed their own distinctive subculture. But the subculuture isn't really from just having Italian hertiage, but also from living and having family ties for generations in and around New York City. The common culture you're hoping to get by living among Italian-Americans in NYC might not be there. Instead being viewed as one of us Italians, it might be more as "guy moved here from the midwest". The people are fine, and Italian-Americans are mostly integrated anyway so you shouldn't feel left out.

I'm not Italian-American, so I'll freely admit I could be wrong.

Yep, lots of Italians. Probably 40-50% are Italian. But that's not why I moved there lol..I like that it has the shopping elements of what I grew up with. Lots of bakeries and "pork stores" and a few pasta shops but it was affordable for us to find a decent home in our price range with a very good school district and not far for commuting to work.

She has grown up around majority white so I dont think that is a problem but racial slurs and neighbors that dont like you right of the bat and dont give you a chance is another thing. White stone looks and seems nice at least on google maps. Prices seem decent. Franklin Square also looks nice. I will look into that area. What is the Italian American Pop. there estimating? Thanks again!
