My friend is from China, she married with a white man here in OK, but he passed away in Jan, left a nine year old girl.My friend told me she wanted to move to NY CITY, cause she might can find job easier. But I am wondering : how she can survive there? I know she will get some government assistance: cash, food stamp, medicare, but still not enough.she has trading compamy experience. Where she should live? public school in NYC is ok? tks
Since you mention your friend is from China, I suggest she contact the Chinese community in NYC (particularly in the Flushing, Queens area) to get more information.
? no single moms live in NYC? I think NYC has most Chinese, good for her. Since she lost husband here.
What Bluedog is saying that the ssocial security death benefits that your friend and her children will receive, as well as medicare, will be the same amount no matter where your friend lives. Since NYC has a very high cost of living, that money will go further in a lower cost of living area, such as the midwest.
It makes no sense for an unemployed single mother to come to NYC, one of the most expensive cities in the entire country, with no job and no support network.
I would suggest she also look into moving to San Francisco which also has a large Chinese population but remember San Francisco is just as expensive as NYC.
I think you mentioned in the other thread about this that your friend lives in Texas.
Plano, TX is the next on the list after NYC for highest percentage of foreign-born Chinese population in US cities. 5.2% (13,000 people) are Chinese. Maybe she should move there.
