I was hoping to get the thoughts of the NYC locals on the Ft. Greene area of Brooklyn. From what I have been reading online it seems to be an upcoming community. I was hoping to find out first hand, well second hand since I can't see it for myself. Here are some questions.
1. What is the majority of people (White,Black,Hispanic,Asian,etc.)?
2. Overall how safe does the area feel?
3. What kind of rental prices are being asked?
4. What kind of things are there to do in the neighborhood?
5. Is there any green areas like parks or dog runs etc.
Any info. at all would be greatly apprecciated. Thanks!
Fort Greene is lovely. Historically it's been a racially mixed but mostly black neighborhood, but a very nice one, solid working and middle class, always well kept. Lately it's becoming more gentrified, with condos starting to spring up and more whites moving in.
I don't live there, but I'm looking into a middle school for my son that's located there, and it feels very safe and pleasant to walk around there. I see a mixture of races - more black than others, but a number of whites, Hispanics, etc. too. On two occasions I've had to ask directions, and the people were always very pleasant and polite.
I don't know what the rents are, and obviously I don't live there, but from what I've seen, it's a lovely area.
A friend of mine recently moved there. She has a fourth-floor walk-up, one bedroom and pays about $2,000/month. She likes the area a lot but complains about a lack of restaurants and decent food stores. The houses are lovely.
If one's worried about the PJ's, stay on the other side of Ft. Greene Park, which is on the DeKalb Avenue side. That side of Fort Greene is a great neighborhood, and already gentroed!
And guess what....ya see all the development on the PJ/Myrtle Ave side? That's gonna get gentroed, too! Believe me!!!!!!

u know what the problem is, theres several new rental developments on myrtle ave that are priced so high the buildings are still vacant.....wish i had a link, but i've seen rentals on myrtle ave for $4500 p/mo....ft greene is not worth that kind of money.
either way myrtle avenue from prince street to carlton ave is the projects and the same basic rules apply here as well when living in the proximity of public housing. but overall fort greene really has changed its a beautiful neighborhood now.....not like in the days of kelvin "50 cent" martin.....now lets see how many real new yorkers are on here....
