Five years ago we decided to look for a place to live that 1) was an easy commute to Manhattan, 2) was within our budget, 3) safe, 4) large amount of space. After looking in way northern Manhattan, and a few parts of Brooklyn, we decided on Jackson Heights, and we have never regretted it.
As some others have pointed out - the historical district is beautiful, and safe. What has not been discussed is why -many of these buildings have not been rentals, for the most part they have been and continue to be owner occuppied.
When the neighborhood was bad with drugs -these folks held on and did not give up. There is a sense of pride here that's hard to match. If you look at the block of 80th street between 37th ave & 35th ave -'The Greystones' -each year around Christmas the houses are all decorated with a tree above the vestibule, a wreath and a white star -the effect is truly beautiful. These are not one building, they are 14 seperate and distinct co-ops -but they share a vision.
In most of the JH co-ops you are not allowed to sublet your unit - ever. This leads to a strong non-transient solid neighborhood.
5-6 blocks in one direction may lead you to an area that's predominately south american -if that's an issue then do not opt to move here. As a resident we enjoy the opportunity to be around an incredible mix of people, cultures and the foods associated.
Most of the people moving to JH lately seem to be arriving from Brooklyn, they have one child and find out another is on the way and you can't beat the space here in these pre-war apartments. Genuine three bedrooms and two baths, some with formal dining rooms, foyers, and even a dumb-waitier that picks up the trash each night!

Did this person really ask if Jackson Heights is like East New York?

Regarding the dumbwaiter -- do you put your trash in the dumbwaiter and lower it down and in the morning the super moves the trash bags into the trash area? Is that how it works? Is this because these buildings were not built with garbage chutes?

My old building in the Bronx had one but was closed the year I moved in. The super would ring a bell into your apt to notify you, that trash was being collected.

Its not "unsafe" it is "ethnically diverse."
Make your choice.

It's much better than East New York. Jackson Heights has a large Hispanic population. It used to be very gritty and parts of it still are, but it is much improved from years ago due to the convenience into Manhattan and ease of transport.

The Jackson Heights garden tour is coming up if anyone is interested. You do have to pay a fee, but it gets you into many of the private gardens of the coop apartment buildings. Jackson Heights Historic Weekend | Jackson Heights Beautification Group

I wouldn't go so far as "squeaky clean". I'll grant that term to something like Main St in Upscale, NJ. Roosevelt Ave all throughout those neighborhoods still has pimps wandering about handing out cards for girls in the buildings for christ sakes.

Default As to your question: is Jackson Height Safe?

My husband and I moved to Jackson Height about 10 years ago and we've enjoyed it very much. We live on 77th Street near 37th Ave and we've never felt unsafe. I agree with the post about chosing an apartment in the back vs. street side if you want to avoid street noise...especially if you are chosing a street on a bus route. People tried to scare us off when we decided to move here 10 years ago but we've been pleased that we didn't listen. It's a fun, quirky, diverse, foodie, well-located (planes, trains, buses) spot. All that said, it depends on your lifestyle and what you are looking for. My husband joined the board of our building a few years ago so if you want insight into coop living or to learn about possible open units, I am happy to chat via email if you want more details about living in JH.

Yes, there are plenty of massage services all long Roosevelt Avenue. In the clubs along Roosevelt many of the strippers are prostitutes (both gay and straight).

With that said, it's not unsafe.
