Tech is huge in NYC and actually bigger than some of the sectors mentioned above. NYC is pretty much the 2nd largest tech city in US. Many companies have NYC as their 2nd largest office, USA or North American HQ, or just as HQ for many large companies and start-ups.
For example, Google's 2nd largest office is in NYC. I believe Spotify's NA operations is based out of NYC (same building as Google), both Facebook and Twitter are wrteching up their hiring activities in grand central area, hot start-ups/young companies like AppNexus, Kickstarter, Etsy Fab are in NYC as their HQ, and some education technology divisions of corporations like Newscorp are in NYC (Amplify, Wireless Generation).
I guess most of you missed the point of my post, which was the sweet tone and cute wording of the Boston remark. Anyone can just list biggest industries.
I agree, insurance is a huge industry in NYC. You also have Aon, Towers Watson, NY Life, Cigna, UHC etc.
Professional services is big - big 4 accounting, big 5 consulting, MBB strategy consulting, Marakon, Mars, LEK, Oliver Wyman, ATK etc.
Tech is going to be pretty big soon. Lots of internet start ups setting up shop in the city along with the big names.
Google, Facebook, and Yahoo have major operations in the city. SAP is opening up an office here, too.
I would also add education. There are a lot of colleges and universities in the area. Ditto for hospitals. And of course media, which includes advertising, film, television, and publishing.

Tech/digital is huge in NYC as is media and advertising. Beyond that, I'd say finance comes top of mind.
All the mentioned above and at least top five in the US for every sector (tourism, telecommunications, media production including film, international politics, etc.) save for agriculture and maybe energy. NYC has an incredibly broad economic base.
The two main economic factors is the financial sector and tourism. In the old days, New York City had a bigger manufacturing sector, but that has been reduced significantly. The city decided to focus on the two aforementioned sectors as the main economic contributors. After that however, as others have said, construction, the healthcare sector, advertising, media and tech would have to rank as major contributors. Tech wasn't always a huge contributor but that has been changing over the years.
