Hi,

I'm considering a few apartments on 105th St at either Columbus Ave or Amsterdam Ave. I haven't really been to this area much so just wondering if it's safe (especially if I come back after dark) or not. I've read a few different posts on here about both areas but the general consensus seemed to be sort of mixed. I do remember someone saying that Central Park West and Manhattan Ave are very safe so I guess walking over there to/from the subway won't be bad but I saw more mixed reviews of Columbus and Amsterdam. I know there's a housing project on 104th so I'm not sure if that's an area to avoid or if I even need to worry about it at all.

Please let me know. Thanks!

Pooja

The area has improved a lot since it's crack days. I would stay closer to Amsterdam, if you can afford it, Broadway and Westend would be better. If you're traveling at night, just be aware. Some blocks there can be very dark.

Interesting, I heard Amsterdam was more sketchy than Columbus. Maybe that was old info though. I'm definitely leaning towards Broadway area which is visibly nicer.

Huge projects are 104th and South (Frederick Douglass Houses?) Your subway stops are both 103rd for all of you.
Best I can say is walk around on a warm Saturday night and make your call. Stop somewhere for a burger...talk to people.

The problem with upper Manhattan is that the neighborhood changes in a 2-3 block radius. Stay closer to Broadway, but you must sill be careful. My daughter in law's sister lives on 104 St by Broadway and their home was broken into via the fire escape - be sure to install window gates with locks.
