How about some planning for the camden area and quit kissing new york's butt? New Jersey should give newark etc over to New York so it can quit scrambling on how make the best of NYC's over run and focus on it's state instead.
Technically, I live in NJ but I'm from Maryland. Anyone who takes pride in being from NJ is nuts. NYCers don't take pride in being from NYC because they don't acknowledge the existence of most places outside it. They're vaguely aware that there's something across the GWB and Lincoln Tunnel, they know there's this benighted land called "Jersey" you can see across the Hudson, and they know they beyond Queens there's a wasteland dotted with enclaves of wealth, but that's about it.
New Yorkers don't take pride in being from New York? That's ridiculous. Of course they do and they should, it's a great place. And I really don't care if you think I'm nuts for liking my home state. Why is it a bad thing that I like the place where I grew up?
Not that it is a retirement place but compared to the fast life of NYC it seems like one.
Thats bc its surburbia. Any suburban area will be less fast-paced than an urban one. That doesnt mean its an old farty retirement place. Your logic is just silly.

I'm from New York City, born in Elmhurst, Queens, and I have been plenty of places outside NYC. The only people in NYC who know nothing outside of NYC are broke, ghetto people with no money to travel and no experience outside of the projects.
Most New Yorkers with money, for example, for a summer beach get away have long gone to places like the Hamptons, Fire Island, etc.
Most New Yorkers who like to gamble have done the casinos in Jersey and CT. This is not counting people who go to Florida or other places on vacation, take business trips, go see friends and families, elsewhere, etc. This is not counting people who have had academic careers and gone to whatever top level schools they could get into.
No Never going to happen. Why Yonkers, or any similar cities (New Ro, Mount Vernon , etc) want to join the city, they are part of a much healthier economy in Westchester County, and the residents interest are better represented as they are not thrown in with 8 million other persons.
I don't know about Wechester's economy being healthier than NYC's, but either way, no one is joining NYC anyway so what does it matter? There's no political drive for any new towns to join NYC.
As for Staten Island, fine, let them leave NYC. Wait till they lose the free ferry and then the tolls to go from Staten Island to Brooklyn go up. It won't seem like such a good deal, but it will be a good deal for the MTA.
Good god....manhattan isnt the whole of nyc....i lived iin brooklyn for most of my life and it is deader than most of long island.
Take the myopic rose colored glasses off and go visit a few more places before you retire.
Which part of Brooklyn you lived in? Flatlands? I can't really speak for Staten Island but the boroughs are constantly more active, on average, than anywhere on Long Island. The City vs the Suburbs, no contest.
I'm halfway through my drive to Colorado right now, sitting in a hotel in the middle of nowhere in Illinois. All I could think of all day, especially when driving through the unbelievably BEAUTIFUL West Virginia is how badly I can't wait to retire and move out of the city.
