astoria, inwood, washington heights, bay ridge, sunset park, bensonhurst are all easily do-able on your budget. several other brooklyn and queens neighborhoods as well (do a forum search)

all have better (cheaper and faster) commutes than staten island or nj

Rego Park, Jersey City.

Wherever you go, make sure you are close to public transportation so you don't have to buy a car...or two.

Forget about anywhere in NJ that isnt right atop the Hudson River and the PATH trains because in any county except Hudson you WILL need a car for everything.

Stay close to his school (I missed where that is) or he will miss classes. Been there, done that.

i mentioned it before, but south orange, nj or montclair seem like great options. there are places in your budget, a 25/30 min train to the city, and a large gay community, especially in the first one.

Thanks for all the great replies! I did forget to mention where my boyfriend will be going to school. He will be commuting to Garden City (NY), probably by car. With that said, it would be really helpful to live somewhere with off-street parking. How does having parking affect the cost of a 1 bedroom in Queens or Brooklyn?

A parking spot in Ridgewood Queens goes for $150 - $200 a month. I park on the streets for free with no problem.

If by Garden City, you mean Adelphi University, they have frequent shuttles to/from the nearby LIRR stations (Nassau Boulevard on the Hempstead Line & Mineola on the mainline), if he doesn't want to drive.

OP, I lived in Jersey City for three years and paid $1800 to live in a brand new condo with laundry and even a pool. The commute on the PATH train to the WTC stop is seven minutes.

Also, don't worry about the tax consequences; you're getting terrible information. NYS income tax will be withheld but you'll get credit for it in NJ and you will NOT owe in both states. Filing in two states is no big deal. The other advantage is that New York City tax will NOT be taken out of your paycheck and that's no small savings.
