San Franciso is the only other place in the U.S. I would actively consider, but the thought of inevitable BIG ONE is food for thought. Seattle, MAYBE...that endless rain would be a damper.
London, yes, Paris, and Vienna, maybe (language barriers)
Yeah there are a lot of European cities that have good quality of life that I think I would really enjoy, if not for the language barrier. Too bad I'm not a polyglot.
I've heard good things about a lot of Australian cities: Syndney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. I have friends in Brisbane and they seem to like it there. Unfortunately, I'm in an extremely specialized and technical career, and I think the Aussies have slightly different credentialing requirements that I don't think I'd meet, despite being practically qualified. Same goes for Canada. I think my qualifications would count for at least some European countries, though. Switzerland would be an option.
A person well suited and in love with NYC would never enjoy living in LA, and Chicago just completely lacks the sophistication which people there are fleeing from in the first place (great sports town though, and I Love to visit).
The most suitable alternative to NYC is San Francisco or Philadelphia, and many feel quite at home in Austin
So that's what its called? Sophistication? Is a good example of NY Sophistication, the ability to not gag while a bum, with dried feces all over his pants, is begging two feet away from you in the subway car...which is stuck in a tunnel...while your conductor is making an announcement on a garbled intercom while speaking with an accent only an illegal immigrant can understand?
I'd recommend San Fran or Philly. San Fran if you want awesome urban with a new crowd who are not impressed you are from NYC. Philly if you want more of the same but more laid back at an affordable price.

Well John Rocker, to address your concerns - New York City is one of the least likely places to be hassled by a fecal matter infested bum. The NYPD does an amazing job taking aggressive beggars off the street. That's not to say they don't walk through your subway car on a regular basis, but they rarely rarely ever try to engage you directly like you see all the time in Boston or San Francisco.
Most of the subway cars these days are like the R-142A rolling stock with excellent speakers:
Those announcements are usually automated pre-recorded voices, so you don't have to be disturbed by those non "american-speaking" lowlifes you dislike so much

I respect your response and agree things have improved immensely with the quality of the trains; however, on my daily commute, I would say close to half the time the train conductor chooses to speak rather than use a pre-recording, and half of that time it is garbled. One not so distant time ago, a conductor in the early morning chose to say most of the usual pre-recordings in their own voice. Like see something say something, stand back from the tracks, if you are near an elderly/pregnant/disabled person, etc... God that was annoying. He chirped one out every couple of minutes.
I also have a homeless person in my car probably 40% of the time, even during rush hour. There was one this morning just like the one the OP you are responding to described, though that is usually not the case.
Also, as you point out that most New Yorkers wouldn't like LA as an example - there are some people posting that I don't think even like NY. Perhaps they're just here for a job. Maybe they are a west-coaster at heart. But I get what you're saying - if you do love New York, certain other cities are just a stark contrast to the type of personality that would thrive there.
