I grew up in the UWS (W86 & Riverside) and making a trip back to the city after many years. I have been there in spurts for business here and there, but this time am actually spending more time to hang out and catch up with old friends.
Was just curious for those of you who lived in NYC pre-iPhone and 'knowing' the places to go to from word of mouth that were hidden gems or neighborhood favorites off the beaten path.
Has technology pretty much changed those little aspects to urban life? Or are they still there, but now instead of it being more on the down low, is, but for a shorter amount of time, thanks to the Yelps and Urban Spoons of the world? Just curious how some of these trends have changed.
As a native that grew up in the 80s, where Times Sq was peep shows and hookers, its AMAZING how much has changed just seeing from the outside from friends and reading the NYtimes. The areas that have gentrified blow me as well especially when I hear about some guys that I grew up with living in BKLYN which back in my day was like a far off distant planet in some ways lol
No disrespect at all, but just making the point that its grown so much and far out now, which is really amazing to me and really glad newcomers are into living there.

Anyhow, was just curious...thanks!
due to the 50,000+ places to simply eat in NYC, not even counting other kinds of venues, its still largely word of mouth to go to places that are hidden gems or neighborhood favorites.

Thanks. The point I was trying to make is, is the phone a go to when in doubt? eg. back in the day you just figured it out by going somewhere vs reading reviews and making a decision.
