David Karp just sold his company, Tumblr, to Yahoo! for 1.1 billion and has signed an agreement he must remain at Yahoo! for 4 years.

Pretty good for a high school drop out, eh? And he's from New York City, for those of you claiming that there are no opportunities for those born here. Really, stop with the lame excuses.

New York City high schools' admissions policy is racially biased: lawsuit

If you don't become a Billionaire after drop out, you can always file lawsuit with the federal Office of
Civil Rights. This is a new lawsuit from today's newspaper, but there was another federal complaint
last september by a coalition of educational and civil rights groups over NYC's specialized high schools
admittance policy too. It's always somebody else's fault, and lawsuit is the way to fix the problem.

You might want to read his profile. This kid came from a upper class family, went to a good school, The Calhoun School, was able to network successfully at a young age, had a parent home-schooled him while he mastered his passion, etc. The average child / adult does not have those type opportunities.

So your statement of "those of you claiming that there are no opportunities for those born here. Really, stop with the lame excuses" is somewhat silly.

Lets talk about the sucide Aaron swartz of Reddit! Or how about facebook purchasing the iphone only app called inatagram for a billion dollars, hipsters cried foul when the app appeared on googles android. Or Microsoft which still sits on a treasure trove of billions in assests from the 90s which aquired skype for 8 billion. dollars a couple of years ago. Plenty of startups and social media are begging to be absorbed into larger entities. As for Yahoo? They are being beat by googles search engine, firefox and microsoft bing. Yahoo is trying best to organize its self especially when they put former google employee marissa mayer at Yahoos helm. Just hope this acquisition works for both Yahoo and David Karp. One thing great about NYC is that you do not neef to flaunt an ivy league degree to get a job. Like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, David Karp a drop out beat the odds of becoming a billionaire.

why the need to pretend he came from humble beginnings? Like Theryu stated, he came from a stable family (financially, educationally, etc), went to a very prestigious school where they only accept the chosen few, his parents supported him dropping out of school and even home-schooled him. His parents networked for him, allowed him to move to Japan to master coding, etc.

The majority of parents can't give that to their kids. Also, this kid was gifted not your average kid. He mastered HTML coding at 11.

A good environment (neighborhood, school, etc) , supported and involved parents, an open and interactive mind = a successful individual.

@NyWriterdude,

You get to change your title of this thread. He does not own the entire Tumblr. Many venture capitalists are the bigger owners. He is not a billionaire yet.

Would be great if this was a rags to riches story but it's more like a wealthy to wealthier story.

Comparing a rare bird like this guy to the average Joe Blow is deceptive. That guy is in the Bill Gates club...what's the membership, 2 or 3, out of billions?

There are some people who are so natrually smart, motivated, and talented that they will make it regardless of formal schooling. The rest of us regular folk had better get some crendtials or learn to do something or we will be working in Target if we're lucky.
