actually both hoboken and harlem are awful for diff reasons
Hoboken is awful because it is suburban mall culture, made worse because people are aware of such and as a result have this enormous defensiveness and resentment. The restaurants are terrible, mall food, but I think I am just accustomed to New York. Where there are many mediocre restaurants but also a few good ones.
I would not move to Hoboken because I do not think that will change.
Harlem is awful given ghetto culture; social service housing and projects.
But Harlem WILL change, as I have pointed out to people many times, in fairness should they want to avail themselves of opportunities. That said, we will certainly move in the next few years - to the Upper West Side proper, to Murray Hill, or to Gramercy.

In comparison to Hoboken, perhaps ... but - there is a group of arrivals who are exploiting the supposed "realness" of Harlem for their own purposes, to find something lacking in their own lives. This is unfortunate, because teenagers should be encouraged to learn the king's English and to do well in school rather than to continue shunning these in favor of maintaining a "keepin' it real" environment.
For example.

Hoboken is nice, but it's just not NYC no matter how close people like to point out it is. It's also fatally flawed being in a low lying region along the Hudson. In upcoming years it will be more and more prone to flooding events like Hurricane Sandy (hopefully not as bad). If you're here for the NY experience, you are making a disservice to yourself by living in Jersey. If you're just here for a job, then go for it but I wouldn't buy any property in Hoboken there for the said reason
@BolehBoleh. I nearly fell off my seat reading your post. Elmhurst, Queens, a nice neighborhood? It is unattractive, congested (the traffic and air quality are terrible), and known for its apartment break-ins. Terrible on every level, and along with Woodside probably one of the worst neighborhoods that newcomers to NY are choosing. Glad you're happy, but I don't think many other people would be. FYI: I've lived in every borough of NYC except Staten Island. I know what a "good" neighborhood is and I'm not terribly picky about it. Sorry -- for me, Elmhurst is a Debbie Downer all the way. Just picturing Broadway in Elmhurst makes me depressed.

Considering where people are moving these days, Elmhurst and Woodside aren't that bad at all. Hardworking immigrant neighborhoods shouldn't depress you.
