We'd always go within our building. And it was lots of fun. The people were nice and some just put out a bowl with treats so we didn't bother them with ringing the bell. And this was over 50 years ago. Some things don't change.
when i was a kids (25 years ago) we hit buildings, stores, homeless people. it didnt matter, everyone was in the spirit.
now, i pack my kids into the car and we head over to the areas with private houses. youre more likely to get loot from families with kids that appreciate the holiday.
since im in brooklyn, we went over to marine park and gerritson. i wouldnt waste my time with an apartment building these days.
I was working late on Halloween and saw kids trick-or-treating at all the businesses on the avenues. The pizza joints, dry cleaners, bodegas, and other businesses on the streets had buckets of candy behind the counter to share with all the kids stopping in.

All the people who have lived in my building for years and who chat to me on the elevator and in the laundry room suddenly turn into total wackos on Halloween and give out candy full of razors to all the kids with their parents standing next to them. I bet you never go to see a movie in NYC either because you know all the seats are full of infected needles.
NYC is known to be like that. I remember about 5 years back or so we were being encouraged to check our water bottles because powdered poison or something was being put into them. I also has a doctor in Manhattan whose secretary was killed from Anthrax at work. Trick-or-treating in NYC… Not my idea of a good idea. Scarsdale is much safer.

I know things that go on in NYC during Halloween. I know plenty of police officers in the city... Some of it is funny, some of it is psychotic. Either way, you should be very cautious when trick-or-treating in NYC, because you never know...
