Please state as many reasons that come to mind as possible. Also if you do not have a problem with stating the neighborhood in which you live, please do so. I only want to know so that I can see the relationship between a person's reasons for owning a car and how good the mass transit network is in that person's neighborhood. Thank you.
I live in central Riverdale (B'way and 252 street) and always had a car. I work in Wakefield which is a 3.8 mile one way commute. it would take me about an hour to do a public transit commute to work. i have free on street parking where i live. and my car is good on gas, lo maintenance and a subcompact. i always had subcompacts. easy to drive in this area and easy to park. tho due to parking spot issues on weekends (huge park across the street attracts visitors who hog up all the spots) i often take the public bus when i want to go shopping, to Starbucks or out to eat
-No subway in my area.
-Free street parking.
-I like to leave NYC once in a while...don't want to rent a car.
-Have friends in Long Island.
-Have a feeling of freedom.
You need a car if you plan on going anywhere on weekends and in the summer. Also for grocery shopping and shopping for larger items. And if you have kids, a car improves your quality of life by 100%. The subway is for every day commuting and for most events at night
I don't have one but will be getting one very soon. One of the many reasons is because public transportation in this city is way too slow and I'm sick of it, and also because it would make it easier for me to explore the city.

Which places?
And if you have kids, a car improves your quality of life by 100%.
How exactly?
Places - the beach, upstate New York, Connecicut/Boston, Philadelphia / Eastern Penn
Quality of Life - take 1 or 2 screaming kids who need to take their nap to a museum in Manhattan from Brooklyn or Queens a few times on the subway with all the stuff you need to lug around, and you will begin appreciate the miracle that is the motor car
public transportation in this city is way too slow
Can you describe specific past experiences that make you say this?
