And for the record, I'm black, that doesn't mean I get along with all Blacks or that I would automatically like living in an area just because there's a lot of Blacks.

I think there's very little overt racism anywhere in the city. After more than 15 years as part of an interracial couple, I can only recall a couple of incidents - one in Manhattan and one in Queens (we live in the BX). The one in Queens was repetitive, the wife of the super where we lived would get drunk and come yell racist stuff at the apartment door. When she sobered up, she was nice as pie. Anyway, unbalanced people will probably be the ones to make comments in any location.

In BR the bigger concern would be not getting the apartment due to more subtle racism. The OP may have to look at apartments without her husband/child. I know interracial couples in Woodlawn who have done this to get an apartment. Up there you now find more interracial couples than you would expect, but still very few black families.

Thanks in advance!
I can't speak from personal experience, but two of my good friends are a mixed race couple (he's black Dominican and she's white) that live in Bay Ridge - they've been there at least 4 or 5 years and seem to love the neighborhood - never heard them complain about any racist incidents.

Even there, if you saw a multitude of apartments its highly unlikely everyone would deny them. There's no point in not going with her husband.

lol... Very naïve... Less leg work... The other thing I've heard is that African-Americans have to pay more to rent places as opposed to Caucasians in majority White neighborhoods and since budget is of concern, she would be wise to go alone and maybe she could score a deal as she is White and a female.

Rent prices are advertised. You can't just abritrarily make up rents, as only an idiot would pay more for an apartment than it was advertised.

And I have lived in plenty of majority white areas, I went to Cornell. I never had any problem getting apartments in those areas. And I won't in the future.

You seem to hate the idea of a black person going into Bay Ridge and enquiring about apartments, which is a key indication the OP needs to ignore you.

If her husband is going to be living there, with their daughter, why even bother trying to hide during the rental process?

If someone has an issue with you and doesn't rent out the apartment to you, who gives a crap? There are plenty of other apartments, and most people want to see a few places before they make their decision anyway.
