Walk back and fore across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Take the Staten Island ferry back and fore for a great view of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan.
Sit in on court cases downtown. You have federal court, NY state supreme court, NYC civil court, among others to choose from. There was even a recent ruling that permitted anyone to sit in on family court proceedings, which can be quite entertaining. All free!
Get a plate of fresh fruit at The Bistro Marketplace, across from GCS, on Park Ave between 42nd & 41st. Like from a buffet line but you pay by weight. Then go west on 42nd 2 blocks to Bryant Park. Sit at a wrought iron table under the majestic trees, enjoy a healthy breakfast and people watch. After breakfast backtrack to the NYC Public Library.
Union Square on a Saturday morning is amazing to just roam around.
If you are visiting, get the 7 day unlimited Metro (Subway/Bus) Card and go wherever you want. Roam around Chinatown and Little Italy which are just a minute apart.
Madison Square Park, from East 23rd-26th Streets, between Broadway and Madison. Big dog walk venue for both pro's and amateurs. Have a shake at the Shake Shack if you can bear the line. OR

Brooklyn Bridge Park, Bronx Zoo, Coney Island, Highline, the Cloisters.
Have lunch in Astoria.
The Cloisters is a part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So the admission there is a suggested contribution (meaning pay what you wish but not completely free).
I believe the Bronx Zoo has free admission at certain times but the rest of the time there is an admission. I suggest that you check the zoo's website.
If one is willing to go out of Manhattan, the Bronx Botanical Gardens has free admission on Wednesdays and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens has free admission on Tuesdays.
