Hey all,

I just got an internship at an advertising agency in FiDi on very short notice. I'm from out of state and have been scrambling to try and find a sublet (preferably for 3 months) with no luck. My job starts on June 1st and I would prefer to move in the day before. I have tried craigslist, airbnb, reddit, and Listings Project, and all are either out of my price range, too far from my job, or won't respond.

As for me, I'm a 23 yo male who just graduated college last August. Very clean, 420 friendly (don't smoke anymore but don't care if you do), no drama, will keep the party outside. I will be working a 9-5 and probably be exploring the city/maybe working on the weekends. Only complication I bring is that I'm pretty allergic to cats. I don't expect to get many offers on this forum, but does anyone have any advice on how to go about finding a sublet on such short notice?

I just did a quickie peek at CL and found 1,500 listings for under $1000, 600 of them in Manhattan.

How exactly are you looking? Are you looking at shares, which is how I think you'll have to go? Have you tried looking specifically through colleges, where students/teachers will be away for the summer? Have you tried contacting the company's HR department and asking their advice, since they must have similar situations with interns all the time?

One caveat: I hope you don't plan to sign anything sight unseen.

When you say something is "too far from my job" -- what exactly do you mean? Many people here commute one hour to work, so I think you could make that your limit for commuting. If you were trying to find a place within 30 minutes, opening up the commute to one hour will give you more options.

I'm not sure why Airbnb places won't respond to you, but I do understand why others might not. A HUGE problem is that you are contacting them from out of state. I know if I'm subletting my place, there is absolutely no way I will sublet to someone without meeting them in person.

I think the best thing for you to do is keep looking on airbnb, but expand your search to include a larger part of the city (further from your job), get a place for one week and when you are here, hunt for a regular sublet so you can search in person.

Another option is to stay in a hostel for a week instead of trying to find an airbnb place if those are hard to get.
