Pushed back for years, Walmart eyes Queens neighborhood Metro.us

Is it necessarily bad for the local economy? I've seen abandoned malls outside of NYC bring in Walmart and all of a sudden other stores followed. I've met people who actually drive out to Long Island to shop at Walmart.

Then there is their employment practices, but if people don't have jobs...

and it will be packed with people saving money each and every day.

Walmart employment practises are no worse than many other companies. They pay accordingly for unskilled, uneducated workers. So all the granola bars can complain about big box stores putting local businesses out....and when were local businesses giving great salaries and benefits. OH yeah....the bodega is paying big bucks to their staff.

No Walmart! We don't want low-skill jobs for the project people! We want them on the government dole!

What's the difference between Walmart and Target? 10+ Targets are OK and Walmart is totally banned. I don't get it.

Wal-mart practices are no longer worse than many other companies because so many companies have followed their horrible employment practices! They started it all..and now every company is utilizing some or all of their employment tactics. And that it, pay them as little as possible, utilize 2 or 3 part-timers so they get nohealth insurance, retirement savings plan, vacation, etc..and shift all of those costs onto the goverment (taxpayers). Since they earn so little, the government will pay all or a portion of their rent, provide food stamps (which they can spend at wal-mart), provide them health-insurance (medicaid), and retirement plan (social security!). And Wal-mart gets to keep all the profit! And now every company is getting in on the action...just have the government (taxpayers) pay for everything, while the copany just sucks out all the profit...yay!

HOWEVER, this is a free country, and keeping wal-mart out of a US city because SOME people (unions) don't agree with their business practices is outrageous and should be illegal (why isn't it?)! Wal-mart is as bad as the bodegas, crappy supermarket, retail industry, etc....yet they are allowed to function in NYC...

The unions are the only reason Wal-mart is not here...whether people actually want Wal-mart here isn't even on the radar...it's all about keeping the unions happy and what's in their best interest! WTF!

Walmart should provide FREE shuttle bus between Port Authority and Walmart in Secaucus, NJ. I bet the bus will be full every day and NYC will lose boat load of sales tax.

Not against it but WMT at this point has been eclipsed in the NYC area by other retailers offering better value like COSTCO, Target and Trader Joe's.
