Shame there is no LGBTQ center in the Bronx. Is the borough homophobic?

Seriously folks. Did you read the article? Here are a couple of quotes:

"(Bronx Borough President, Ruben) Diaz (Jr.), a Puerto Rican, called out the Latino community for nurturing homophobia responsible for hate crimes. District 15 City Council candidate Cynthia Tompkins, a mixed-race lesbian, criticized the white and black communities for not accepting her and faulted lesbians in general for not participating strongly in the movement. And Rev. James Dusenbury criticized the faith community for rejecting its own followers because of their sexuality...A year after the arrest of the Bronx Pride Center's director Linda Winters for embezzling over $143,000, the LGBTQ Center, which rose from the Pride Center's ashes, still has no money, no clients and no physical space. "

Bronx Pride can't even amass enough funds to reopen its Pride Center. What gives?

There was one until very recently. It wasn't shut down due to homophobia. It had to close because the director and her lesbian lover embezzled all the funds and it went bankrupt.

Bronx LGBT Center Director Sentenced To Prison For Embezzling $338,000 / Queerty

Why would anyone donate to a non profit group with a history of financial mismanagement like that ?

how is having this center going to decrease homophobia? the latino culture is a super macho culture. gay males are looked down upon. lesbian are looked as a joke. a family will pass on their values (homophobia included) to their offisprings. you can't tell parents how to raise their kids.

Having a center is exactly what would help. It's a date place and a place to come together for support most needed when one faces so much negativity.

I would think that the persons responsible for the embezzlement have been brought to justice. I don't see why you think that because there was an incidence in the past, it should preclude people from donating in the present. It does not make the cause less worthy. You just have to make sure the situation that allowed for the incidence to occur (a lack of internal controls) has been rectified.

This is something of a stereotype that the Latino culture is so super macho. The majority of the drag queens in NYC are Latino. There's a pretty big gay latin scene in Queens (at least 6 gay latin bars), in Jackson Heights and to a lesser degree Astoria. Upper Manhattan has a couple of predominately gay Latin bars.

In Latin America, Nicaragua has had a woman President. Chile has had a woman President. Argentina and Brazil have both had female Presidents, while the US has YET to have a female President.

The Bronx had other issues which effected gays. You had massive poverty in the Bronx, and an excess of welfare people in the past. I don't think you can use your FOOD STAMPS card to pay for drinks at the bar. LOL The Latin community is the Bronx is changing due to recent waves of immigration (and the ending of easy welfare) but it likely has to become even more affluent to nurture worthwhile gay scene.

Then again, since the Bronx is the cheapest borough, as time goes by you may end up getting more gays of all ethnicities moving here. South Bronx is gentrifying and in a few years it will be really nice. And its close to job centers in Midtown. You do have decent gay communities in Upper Manhattan, so I think the gay presence in the South Bronx is in the early stages of growing.

You can't force other cultures to accept you.
That's why you spend so much time trying
to create your own culture, but how long
will that last really? Think about it.
