The only issue I have with that area is the quality of service on the #2. It's a looooong ride into Manhattan from those stops (on the 2), and when there's track work being done, it's a huuuuge inconvenience!

Agreed, the 2 train is completely unreliable, it takes ages to get out of the Bronx taking the 2, it only makes sense if you're going to Brooklyn. I used to walk across the Bronx East Park to the 205th St station to catch the D train. IMO it's the fastest way to get to Midtown from Olinville. The other option is the Metro North from Williams Bridge, but since it's way more expensive than subway I think many people would pass on it and only use it as an option to get back home after a night out. If you live around Allerton Av you could always take the Bx26 to the Bedford Park Blvd station and then take the D.

No way.The time difference on the trains doesn't justify a walk across Bronx Park or the taking of a bus to get to the D train.It just makes no sense at all.The running time on the 2 non express train from Burke to 42nd St is about 43 minutes and the running time on the D from Norwood to midtown is 41 minutes.It would take at least 10 or 15 minutes to walk over to Norwood or to take a bus to Bedford Park, so those routes would actually take a lot longer even though you'd spend a few minutes less on the train.

Also,there is a 5 express train on the line during rush hours that gets from 180th st to midtown in 28 minutes.

Weird but I use the 2 and 5 constantly and never have any problems.

The running time on the 2 from Allerton or Burke is actually only about 4 or 5 minutes longer than the 6 from Parkchester.Also,the difference is only 2 stops.There are 22 from Parkchester to 42 St and 24 from Burke to 42 St.

- the Burke Avenue station is totally safe, I used it on a daily basis at all times of day and night and I never really spotted anything suspicious. I agree though that the hustlers make the station look kind of sketchy to the outsiders. But, as soon as you realize that those guys hang out at the bodegas around the station 7 days a week and 365 days a year and are not looking for any kind of trouble you should be alright;
- the 2 train is more than okay, the first couple of rides I was a little bit anxious (the only white guy in the car), but once I got over it I noticed nobody gives a damn about my smartphone or camera, cause well... everybody has a smartphone these days;
- the area of Burke Av x White Plains Rd may look a little bit weird at first glance, but I didn't really see anything out of the ordinary;
- the neighboring areas (Norwood, Bronxwood, Bronxdale) looked alright to me (especially Norwood and Bronxdale), the same counts for Bedford Park, Fordham, Belmont and West Farms, with the exception of Grand Concourse between Bedford Park Blvd and Fordham Rd, every single time I got there I saw some weird stuff going on.
Thank you for taking the time to post the update.

The 6 all the way to 42nd? That's torture. Switching at 125th for the 4/5 is better unless you have to sit.

Well, that's weird, the D train stops 12 times before going express on 125th St, while the 2 makes 16 stops to 110th St where it also turns express. Then the D has only one stop on its way to 7th Av (which is already Midtown) while the 2 stops at 2 stations before reaching 42nd St. Also the rail distance from 205th St to 7th Av is around 2 mi shorter than the one between Burke Av and Times Sq. You sure it's only 2 min difference? And did you consider the problems the 2 has with staying on its running schedule? Every single time I took the 2 it was delayed + it often made an unexpected 1-2 min break before going underground.
