Wondering everyone's opinion on living in a lower level apartment. I am going to look at one today. I have never lived in a basement apartment, but my concern is not having any natural light. I don't want to feel like I am in a cave.

I am curious to hear everyone's experience been with it?

Don't do it...

they tend to be damp, and humid. Not healthy to live in. The lack of light can really get to you.

My first apartment was in a sub-basement, not totally underground but about three steps down. It had big windows but still felt dark. And the BUGS! It was a brand new house and no one had ever lived there before but me, but I used to get these hideous centipedes everywhere. It was really gross. One time I had some kind of weird worm on my kitchen floor.

Make sure it is a legal apartment.

my uncle owned one. I stayed over a few times back then. Can never tell when is night or day. Next big issue is the building trash is usually on the ground floor or basement. And you know what trash attracts? you got that right...RATS! so my uncle's old place has on & off rat problems.

Maybe it comes with a yard, so worth checking out. Main concern would be your proximity to the furnace.

Confirm that it is a legal apartment and has security gates on the windows. I have lived in and sold street level apartments. Make sure that your window treatments open from the tip to provide privacy, yet views.

My main concern would be the lack of natural daylight and also I would want to make it sure it was a legal apt.

Sometimes it looks like a hole from the front and then you find it opens onto a garden in the back.

But if you are below grade front and back it's like being entombed. But a lot of people do it and learn to get creative with artificial lighting. Maybe a lovely picture of the Empire State building on one of the tiny windows.

If it's not legal, don't take it.
