Just wondering, because this sounds like something I'd really like to do some day.

I've had a lot of experience with unfriendly police in Asia and would love to do some of that undemanding, "face-of-the-city" work that auxiliaries are often called on to do, like working with crowds at parades and the marathon; giving people directions; that kind of thing.

I'll be too old to be a regular cop anyway. From what I understand, auxiliaries put in just 12 hours a month, which is perfect for me. I'm much more likely to be serving the people with a smile on my face if I'm only doing it a few days a month.

Has anyone out there done it, or do you know anyone who has? What's it like?

No offense, your OP just reminded me of this old movie:

My friend used to do it...he worked detail at carnivals. I even went to a meeting at the precinct with him one time. He liked doing it.

Thanks, SeventhFloor! Stories like his are what I want to hear. I actually want to be a police interpreter, but it seems like they use auxiliaries for some of that work. Either path would suit me fine.

For the uninitiated, NYPD auxiliaries are not just regular folks who start up police-like patrols as ni Bigjake's movie (though I want to see that film now). You can read about the program here:

I did Auxiliary for 4 years... I loved it.. Until I turned 21. I did underaged drinking stings at bars and clubs. After that I did special events andminor patrol work. I did a lot of admin work in the precinct as well. I then couldn’tcommit to it since I found a job.

I had a gay friend who did it...I judged him a little nuts.
He wanted to ride horses and wear leather like straight guys??? He wanted to feel like a cop.
But he was an interior decorator...anyone with eyes would know him as a Queen.

In retrospect (he's dead) I think it was a case of self loathing.

It was sad to see...but to HIM, it defined him as a real man. Sad, Sad, sad.

He was a relic of an age of abuse.

There's plenty of gay REAL cops, good ones too. Are you trying to say that gay people shouldn't be auxiliaries, or cops for that matter? How sad. Who's the relic again?

Perhaps it's just me, but I don't consider wearing leather as straight ...

Me neither, but cops on horseback seem to like the fashion statement.

Shay, this is actually the one thing auxiliaries do that I'm opposed to!

It's because of entrapment operations like these that so many bars and clubs accuse people who are well voer 21 of being underage and sometimes refuse to serve them if they're not carrying proof of age.

What kind of admin work did you do? Did you get along well with the "real" cops? Did they treat you like you were in the way? If you've got any stories to share, I'd love to hear them.
