Is it realistic for a gainfully employed, long-time but very discrete and responsible opiate user, to live well in NYC in 2013? Are opiates still plentiful? I am thinking specifically of the Bushwick/Ridgewood areas but NYC in general.

The answer to the question is "No". You start out using drugs. You end up with them using you. And it will happen mo matter where you live.

Some people have been using heroin consistently and with little trouble since the mid 1990s. Sure, more people would choose to smoke some weed after work and more still to drink alcohol. But some of us like opiates more, and use them just as responsibly as the social drinker uses alcohol.

If you have enough money you can probably find a reliable source that wont sell you a less than first class shot. Rich junkies can live a long time, though not all the time. Eric Clapton nearly destroyed himself and his talent while on heroin back in the '70's. Trouble is most don't have the money and end up dead like Lenny Bruce.

Good luck, just keep making me money. Dead junkies are just as much use to people like me as they are to thier dealers (which I am not).

Many people have gone down this road with full intentions of not having a crippling habit. Many died, went to jail, fell on skid row or had a long battle to get clean only after losing everything. Its easier then you think to wake up one day and wonder how life spun out of control. Did you think we were going to cheer you on? Maybe you are looking for validation of such a lifestyle?

You'd be surprised how many of them are walking around town...but they got the opiates from the pharmacy.

Opiates, especially heroin, are a dead-end street. "Responsible opiate user"? Ain't no such thing. If you want to live a normal life span you'll stay away from the stuff.
