I've been such a clueless Manhattanite for 39 years that I didn't even realize you could not legally hail a taxi outside of it (or even in the northern reaches of it). That finally changes this summer. Seems like good news for all.

I remember in the 60s that yellow medallion cabs would cruise the busier streets in Brooklyn and you could hail them. Wonder when it became illegal or maybe it always was but no one cared. I suspect when the livery services became bigger in the late 60s and 70s that the medallion drivers made some sort of deal to monopolize Manhattan.

Not looking forward to seeing taxis jam up Staten Island streets with their improper pick ups constantly blocking lanes, waiting at an intersection to see if someone hails them, double parking, etc. I hope it does not become popular here.

Your Five-Boro Taxi Plan Questions, Answered - WNYC
You are allowed to hail a yellow cab anywhere in the city.

Yes, haven't you always been able to?

In fact, isn't getting into a cab at JFK/LGA considering "Hailing a cab?"

Regardless I have often over the years 'hailed" a cab in BK and Queens......

I think the difference is whether or not a cab WANTED to do business in BK and Queens rather than Manhattan. That is what the new taxi plan is addressing.

I am happy to finally get real cabs in the outerboroughs. As it stands now you are almost always stuck with these gypsie cabs of guys who can barely speak english, they don't take credit, and every fare is a negotiated rate based on what they believe you can afford. Who wants to deal with that hassle everytime you take a cab? NOBODY!

Can't wait for the new cabs!
