I won't specify exactly why I do for a living but let's just say I handle low-income residents on a daily basis. Now, I don't like to generalize, but let's just say the amount of stupidity I see and hear on a daily basis will make you run for the hills.

Today, I heard one "father", and I use the term loosely, tell his 3 year old to "stop running around or I'll smack the **** out choo (you)." The ignorance and stupidity is mind blowing. Who says that to a 3 year old child??? Loud, arrogant, and angry folks out there. I often go home feeling sorry for these people. They fail to see that it is 2013 and they could choose to read and educate themselves. instead, they're materialistic, entitled, and have zero class. I bring this up because, I'v dealt with thousands of folks like this.

There needs to be a leader in the minority community. The degradation in which I have seen these folks fall to is..disgusting at best. How did we end up like this? There are endless resources that could imprive these people intellectually and help them improve their situation. It's like they CHOOSE to be ignorant. What have we done wrong that has made these people think that they do not have to out any effort in life? i guess ignorance really is bliss.

well what are we doing here then? Are we just enabling them to act like this? if so, then welfare has done much more bad then good for them.

I agree, But ponder this, if you were to take them all off the cheese at ounce what would they do? They have no education or skills, they would get angry and dangerous, mad mad drama would ensue..

Well, that leads me to a question that I was discussing in another forum: Do you ever intervene in a quiet way?

But I think you're conflating different things. There are certainly wealthy, educated people who also are materialistic, entitled, and have zero class. What you're talking about is more of a kind of cluelessness about what used to be behavioral norms.

By the way, do you also notice, as I do, that minorities generally tend to be far worse with their children?

JayJay,

The fact that you consider this issue to be a matter of "us versus them" is a problem in itself.

These issues will never change unless we embrace each other as one community with universal problems we must solve together.

Unfortunately, my personal view on this matter is pessimistic. The current state is a result of capitalism (have v have not), long standing discrimination, and self centered American ideologies.

But the have-nots could HAVE if they would just embrace personal responsibility and make a proactive effort to change themselves. I'm sorry if I make it sound like "us verses them" but how am I suppose to try and reason with someone who tells their child that they will smack the **** out of them? I feel sorry for some children, I really do. Because they didn't get to choose their crappy parents and it will effect the rest of their lives.

This is already happening with all the government cuts people are more desperate. I don't have numbers but I'll guess robberies are up in the NY tri-state area.

There are cuts but I'm sure it won't be in welfare. It would cause riots. I find that people who are "poor" in this country are not poor compared to other nations. "poor" folks here have expensive sneakers and an Iphone. Nobody is starving to death, put it that way. If anything, they're late paying rent because they spend their money on stupid ****.

I think it's just a matter of upbringing.

I agree with you, tends to be a lot of minority parents take out their frustration on their children more so than whites I think. Where whites may have more money and when they don't want to be bothered with their children they hire a nanny 24/7.
