Very accessible by transit part of the city where you can get really good and cheap food and sometimes groceries. It's also got a long history to go with it.
from a middle age man, chinatown in nyc is a dump, and dirty and disgusting.
it is keeping me away from going to manhattan chinatown.
Let us hope mayor Liu, if he gets elected, will enforce some hygiene standards there to help shape up the place and vitalize its attractions.
There are more Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown than Chinese
I don't think that's true. I think there are just about as many soup dumpling places in Chinatown as there are Vietnamese places, and that's just Shanghai cuisine.

It could be a contender--it depends on what you think makes a Chinatown number one. It's the great tourist attraction out of all the NYC Chinatowns and the one in San Francisco is probably the only comparable tourist attraction. It isn't the largest Chinatown anymore though with Flushing (generally wealthier) or Sunset Park (generally poorer) Chinatowns now being bigger. The largest Chinese community in the US is probably that of the San Gabriel Valley, but that's really a huge collection of suburbs for the most part.
I think what makes it special is that it's bigger than most Chinatowns in other cities. Certainly bigger than in Boston or Washington.
