A bit of both. Whites number at around 600,000 now. In 1990 [20 years ago], Queens had 1.9 million residents, and was 48% white, which means there was at least somewhere between 900,000-950,000 whites in the borough.

Why are so many Whites leaving Queens and where are they going? Are they leaving New York City entirely or what? It does pain me that there are so few White ethnic neighborhoods left here in New York City because the "gentrified" White neighborhoods are boring. Just a bunch of yuppies or hipsters from out of state.

Since when were Irish, Italians, Jews and Albanians not white? They may have not been considered good enough to claim White status in the past but that was many years ago. Irish and Italians come from Europe and are classified as Europeans. Europeans are White.

Also most Hispanics in my book are not White but since the US census lets them pick White they do since some of them love to cling to their Spanish side when in fact most of them are mixed with Black and/or Native American. Unless they are descendants of say Germans or Italians or either White Europeans that immigrated to Latin America, most of them even in the "Whitest" parts of Latin America are mixed but may be able to pass for "White" if they are light enough but their features (nose, lips and just overall physical makeup) usually indicates that they are mixed, especially the Caribbean Hispanics. I've even seen ones from Latin America that are clearly mixed that try to pass off as White. Very funny to say the least.

Snake: If you educated yourself about what it means to be "white" and it's history, you would know that they are artificially increasing their numbers by allowing non-whites to use the moniker to maintain the illusion of dominance. Jews are considered white somehow (remember the whole Hitler thing against them?), however they are not, and if excluded from the white population, NYC whites would be virtually nonexistent. Italians and Irish, the 2 largest ethnic white groups (you do know why they are called ethnic whites right?), are not white either and never were, but with the flood of them into the city, the whites needed the numbers so they were allowed into the club.

Now that Hispanics are taking over, you can be "white", "black" or "asian", as Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. And guess what racial classification is most popular? I too must use white...not because I consider myself white necessarily, but because I am clearly not black or asian!

When you consider people like Ray Romano, and Adam Sandler as white, you are basically saying anyone who doesn't obviously look black, asian, indian (or some mix of these) is white by default. And that is the sorry status of whites today in NYC..which was never the case before. Why? Because actual whites are a dying breed, so in order to keep the party going they have to keep letting "those people" in.

FYI: You should of course know that white is short for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP), which were, and still is, the British, Dutch, Germans, etc. It was never about simply having white appearing features or being European. Being European means you are caucasian, not white, and therein lies the difference....but they need the numbers..so come one, come all! Welcome to the party!

^^ This post is just so ridiculous. If Ray Romano or Adam Sandler aren't White then what are they supposed to be? Green? Also I didn't know that Germans were all Anglo-Saxons nor Dutch people for that matter.

There are some Hispanics that are White, but most of them are not, particularly the ones with mixture. Lots of Argentines are actually White and are descendants from Spain, Italy or Germany with no mixture with Blacks or Native Americans. That's who they're thinking about if anybody, because most of the Caribbean Spanish speaking countries (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.) are mixed with Spanish, Black and or Native American so I don't see how they can claim to be "White". LOL!

I am not a WASP but I am certainly White.

We've been through this one before with SoBro, and what I think that he means is that until not very long in this country; being white was a social construct that meant you were from a European protestant background.
Back then, the Irish being catholic or the Italian having darker skin complexion than the their Northern European counterparts, were not looked upon as equals. Following that logic, the only whites back then were the mayflower types. Mainly the British, Dutch and German.

Society, language and people evolved, so now the term has expanded.

For example;
According to the US census criteria, Arabs being a type of Semitic people (just like the Jews) are considered white.

LOL... Well Hispanics get to choose what their race is and many of them deny that they have any Black or mixture in them so of course they would pick White. White is seen as better in many cultures including the Hispanic culture. From these links three of them clearly have Black mixture in them and one has Native American.
