i mentioned the story many times here but about 3 years ago marilyn and i were accosted in ally pond park while doing a photo shoot.
it was the first time in our lives we were ever accosted and im 60 . luckily when i grabbed a tree limb as a club the bad guy didnt have the weapon he threatened to produce so the combo of me coming at him with a club and my wife screaming had him run off.
it could have ended very different though if he attacked us with a weapon before i got a chance to grab the club..
just because it hasnt happened to you yet and you dont frequent the areas you think you shouldnt doesnt mean it wont.
the truth is i held back clubbing him when i had the chance. that could have been a fatal mistake.
but what if i did club him and he had no weapon as he said.
i could have possibly been made the bad guy and have to spend 50k just to finde i am innocent . then there is a civil suit if he was injured or killed.
for those that didn't hear about our saga i will post what i put up back in october 2010.
so today marilyn and i went to ally pond park a local park in queens with woodsey hiking trails... we have been there many times both biking and jogging as well as a great place in the fall for photos.
well we werent really paying attention to the folks on the trail ...
there was a guy coming towards us who the closer he got to us the more in our path he was,... when we reached him he got right in front of us and starting saying something about the cameras. he was obviously high...
he started to get more hostile and marilyn and i ended up about 10 ft apart while i contented with this dude...
it looked like any moment it was going to turn ugly and marilyn started screaming for help,.. it startled him and he started to walk towards marilyn. that gave me the seconds needed to grab a log from the ground and start to approach him.. he came back in my direction mumbling about something in his pack he was going to get.
we started walking away while he was still yelling and threatening us but now that i had a club he didnt follow us.
after we settled down we reviewed what just happened and what we did wrong .
for one thing neither of us thought to react and dial 911.
the cameras were still around our necks and if he grapped them we could have choked one of us.
marilyn keeping her distance was a good thing and screaming worked out well as it bought seconds for me to grab a club.
the point is we are still formulating a plan in case this ever happens again. maybe i should have handed both cameras to marilyn so she could run with them and get help while i dealt with the bad guy.
maybe i should carry a wad of singles wrapped around a matchbook with a rubberband around it. it looks like a wad of bills and can be thrown quite far.
maybe saying here get yourself some beer and chill out and throwing that wad as far as i could would buy the time to let us run.
all in all it was a pretty scarey experience......but the point is this is something you have to really plan for as eventually it may happen....there were so many errors we shouldnt have done,, even waiting to see if he produced a weapon from his pack was stupid.. i should have clocked him before letting him even get his hand in it . that was dumb.
As mathjac says, it is fine for your home or apartment but a public street is NOT YOUR GROUND, it is OUR ground, same for subways, buses, escalators. Nor are stores, theaters, or restaurants YOUR ground.
Zimmerman was a murderer who got off because of a racist prosecution choosing a racist jury in a racist county in front of a racist judge.

SYG allows u to be outside of yo home, start sh1t and then kill someone if u feel like ur losing, thats the defense that Z used
Yep, thats it in a nutshell - thats why SYG laws, as enacted in many states, willl always end up covering situations where the killer started the damn thing. Like Zimmerman.
In NY you can use whatever force, include deadly, is required to defend you and yours in your own home if you are in a life or limb threatening situation. But outside - there is no such get-outa-jail-free-card - If you can safely retreat then you must. Common sense, and not really a problem for anyone other than those that have a pathological need to "prove themselves" all the time.

You can run away (or acquiesce) all you want. Your view on conflict isn't a concept that I'm capable of understanding. My ONE life is mine, and I will do anything to defend it, against anyone, no matter what the effete think about my actions.
Zimmerman should have tried to defend himself with his hands and fists before resorting to deadly force. I never saw any evidence that he even threw a single punch. Hell, he looks like he outweighed the kid by fifty pounds.
