Even in 30 years? Look at Beijing built five lines in five years and we're still building one line for the past five years and much more to come. (2nd ave)
Needs an A train expansion into Riverdale and a few other adjustments.
Lines will likely expand, the question is how long? Funding is the biggest issue. Congestion Pricing seals the deal on the 2nd Ave subway but the other lines will needed sources of revenue too.
I especially like the addition of the Q which allows you to cut from West to East in upper Manhattan. As it is, if I want to take the subway for that route, I go all the way up into the Bronx to Yankee Stadium and then back down on the 4.
This wil never ever, ever, ever happen. It costs way too much money to build in NY. The only reason why the 2nd ave line and the 7 extension to the west side is getting built now, is because those lines will service the rich people in dense areas. The other rich areas some of these proposed extensions will serve will oppose this out of fear of having their neighborhood become too dense. That Astoria line extension has already been shot down so many times by the neighborhood.
Yes and No , the outer boroughs like Queens and The Bronx would be very easy and cheap to tunnel under...its not as messy as Manhattan. Same goes for Urban Jersey.... Sadly Brooklyn will have to Elevated due to Flood risks and NIMBYS would stall ever extension plan , except the Regional Connector/X line which would use LIRR Freight ROW. All the money is focused on the SAS which in my opinion after Phase 2 , is a lost cause due to Flood risks and costs....the Focus after Phase 2 should be the Bronx and Queens. Some of the lines in Queens could be supplemented with a Light Rail Network running along Northern , Woodhaven , Francis Lewis Boulevards which can then be tied into the Subway or LIRR...other cities have done this in their outer areas where subways become too expensive to build. Tokyo , London , Paris , Berlin , Toronto , Philadelphia , San Francisco , and Stockholm have LRT systems that connect the outer regions with the core areas or transportation hubs. Newer LRVs can carry up to 400 per train... The Cost of a surface LRT line running a few miles would be about 1-2 billion , depending if you need to build a train yard , which each line would need...
It's hard to think further than that simply because NYC and it's suburbs could change drastically in that time not necessarily requiring that level of growth of the subway system.
It's likely cheaper to increase the capacity of the current areas of the city that are lesser developed.
That said, like any pet project in downstate NY, Philanthropy is the only real hope.
As a parting gift to NYC Bloomberg could put 5 Billion down to span the N to LGA. Change the line color to a nice Bloomberg L.P. black.
Would take way more than 30 years. I do think it's possible eventually, but it would be dependent on the system eventually catching up to all the deferred maintenance first before serious construction ever got started. Which means serious expansion wouldn't *begin* for 30 years (with prospects for a system like that in... 70 years? 80? at least).
