I lived out there for years as well. I'd say that many parts of the west coast have advantages over this area. And vice-versa....
One thing the LA metro has that is better that has been discussed ad nauseum is the balmy, sunny, dry, weather.
People wise I will take the northeast anyday, I like my human discourse straight no chaser.

Guess I don't mean only the LA metro area when I hear "west coast". In fact, I don't even necessarily include it.
I highlighted it because the OP is from there and it is the WC biggest metro. I am aware there are other places on the WC that are worth their salt.
I hear ya man. And I hear ya on a lot of the people. I tend to agree. Aside from the people, I am still of the opinion that there is so much awesomeness out there that we don't really have here.

I think that has to do a lot with people on the WC not being as constricted and piled up like NYC, less condensed, You can be freer out there and get your freak on in so many ways that would be frowned upon in the north east. Out there people move to be on their own strange trip. I learned this on many trips to the bay when I was younger.
I'll just say this. You can sorta go 'squatchin out here.......but not really. I'll leave it at that.
