Well off = white folks.
At least that's the mentality of those hating the well off.
Take from it what you will but it won't end well either way.
What? How does a thread based on vaguely stated ignorance get to be 11 pages long? I didn't bother reading all the replies because the topic sounds just like "this is why I hate another race, now your turn." If I were a moderator, I would just close these for pure stupidity.
I am a life long New Yorker and "YES" I do notice the tension between the have's and have not's. I live in a doorman building and the staff can get pretty nasty. I guess it sucks seeing people come and go all the time with shopping bags or suitcases dressed well etc.
It's sad but what is someone to do ? I donate and do my little part in helping out.
Lately I try to keep a low profile. This has been going on for a while now.

That's funny: you say you didn't read the thread, yet pass judgment on its content, and acuse others of ignorance. How did you get to be so smart? LOL

The philosophy in our home - "The more you have, the more you owe."
No need to keep a low profile.
Assisting people in figuring things out is sometimes more valuable than donation - assuming you mean financial donations.
The truly rich people I've come across usually try to hide it. The only ones typically I see 'showing off' are the aspirational wealthy and people who grew up poor. I don't hate someone though simply for being rich. It depends how they made their fortune. If it was through honest hard work then I say good for them. I do find, however, the playing field for getting ahead in life seems more unbalanced in this country than ever. And, like they say, behind every great fortune is a great crime.
3- Professor Landsberg says US Mean/Median Wealth Ratio is No 1, but his table shows USA's Mean Wealth per Adult trailing Australia, France, Japan, Norway, and Switzerland. So US is 6th out of the top 29 countries.
Just for clarification - it is the RATIO of Mean/Median Wealth that he is comparing and saying this measure accurately shows wealth disparity. Mean Wealth alone does not. You seem to be comparing the wrong figures. As for the Professor's contention and why he considers this ratio an excellent measure of wealth disparity probably requires a direct inquiry. I'll share your comments with him.
Finally page 83 is a chart showing High-net worth individiauls by region, I don't see any chart comparing GINI. By high net 1 million to 1 billion+ in estimated value of assets. Very large range tht doesn't seem to measure wealth disparity but geographic concentration of wealth. I think you meant page 84 and now I see your point which I find surprising. However, interesting to see Norway, Finland and Iceland who do have a more "socialist" elements in their economies and societies showing lower wealth disparity than the US. So, I will say that although I still favor Scandinavian adapatation to socialist elements in that its citizens gain through their governments greater cradle to grave support and higher taxation than the US. But I was incorrect to focus on Sweden as even with this region their is a good deal of variance. Plus as the financial crisis in Iceland shows, you can have this but it does not protect the country from the overall population becoming poorer due to allowing banks to take on too much risk through lessening of regulations (which might support my view that at best government reigns the excesses of the wealthy's speculations whih can carry far greater risks to the society).
ANyway, Astoria is more than Greek cafes - though the tavernas on 23rd Ave are a slice o older Astoria, these days you have quite a few choices -
Funny, and here I thought CD's TOS required that English be used.
not my fault if you can't translate it.
