There are rumours that New Yorkers walk everywhere. Now I wanted to find out if that's true

What do you consider walking distance?

For me, I'd say it's 4 miles on average. It may change depending on the area. If I'm walking through an area full of awesome buildings and outdoor cafes, I can walk for miles and miles and miles. If I'm walking through a disgusting industrial park it's more like half a mile though because I dislike industrial areas and would rather take a bus.

I would consider walking distance of up to 3 local subway stops/stations.

I walk from Freedom Towers to Staten Island ferry everyday and have been for about a year without a problem. I think that is about walking distance. Takes 15 mins. Depends though.

One of the most annoying thing about being a real estate agent is "walking distance or close to work" some people just seem terribly lazy or have no idea of distance or maybe just dont like walking lol. I went from 23st 9ave to 35 st madison in 15mins. So to me anything around 30/35 mins is walking distance.

I really prefer to walk, but it depends how much time I have. And on the weather! My husband works in midtown and I work below Canal Street. I've frequently walked to midtown when the time permitted and really enjoyed it. We also bike.

It really depends on a number of factors including but not limited to...

•Elevation (Hills, bridges, valleys)

•Obstacles (highways, superblocks, rivers, etc)

•Built environment (vibrant neighborhood, industrial, park, etc)

•Average walking speed, gender, attire, age, and health.

I think a reasonable average walking distance in NYC is .5 to 1 mile for most in terms of reaching a specific destination. Anything more and most people will take some sort of transportation due to time/energy consumed. Recreational walks are almost impossible to judge, could be miles depending on the individual.

I walk 1.5- 2.5 miles every morning that it isn't raining or snowing.
But if I am GOING somewhere then I take the shortest route to public transport.

I will never take a subway to go only 2 stops unless I have a freebie left over from a bus ride or vice versa.

All told, I would guess I walk about 4 miles per day.

For me walking distance is anywhere from DUMBO To below 14th street. If its a nice day, I may even walk all the way to 34st.

I have family/friends in the suburbs of LI. Walking distance is the closet parking spot to the front entrance of the store.

On weekdays I feel the need to live within 0.5 - 0.7 miles from a subway stop. Could do more if winter didn't exist.

On weekends I walk until I'm absolutely exhausted. That could be anywhere from 5 - 10 miles, depending on the day and the elements.

Visited a friend in Florida. When going to parking lots he would park as far as possible. Says if he didn't he would never get to walk at all.
