Wendy it really depends on your comfort level. If you are coming from Podunk, Iowa, it will be an extreme shock, scary, and like living in a foreign country (not the good ones!). If you are coming from East NY, it will be a step up and you will probably have no issue.

A "regular" person would find that the area is chock full of low-income residents, squeezed into dense tenement buildings in various conditions. The area is known to be loud and generally frozen in time, 1990 to be exact. I generally recommend staying in the lower Concourse, south of 165th which is where all the changes/improvements/amenities are...and where you find better buildings, better people, and green space.

Right now, I live in Corona Queens and the rent here is very, very expensive and I am living in a studio apt so small that you cant imagine...I am paying 950 plus utilities, the only cheaper thing is a basement and believe me in Queens living in basement with the owners on top of you is a headache...I wanted the place because I will be working in Whashington Heights. I don't know I am totally confused I used to live before in 165 and gerard ave and it was very solitary, before coming to Queens, but this one give me a more secure sensation since is right there in Grand Concourse like in this big avenue....

Well if you can live on 165th and Gerard then 175th and GC is not that different. In that case, I say go for it.

Hey Wendy..
Well I'm assuming you will be living on the uptown side of GCC right on the same side of the hospital? I think you will be OK. I agree with sobro if you did gerard and perhaps davidson ave you can do GCC! I live in the vicinity and I have walked from the hospital to my house past 175th on the concourse at 3am alone while pregnant and i'm here and fine. To me that block right before you get to the D train is OK and actually bright at night. There is a doorman or security in the remade building 1700 GCC (the capri) MY choice wouldn't have been the first floor apt for many reasons, however, you take what you can get and you literally have so many options as far as mass trans (1/2 bus, D/B/4 train, 32 bus, 36 bus on tremont and easy to catch a cab)
Good Luck!
