Yeah, I have noticed the prices to be higher in Rego Park myself.
Does anyone know about Flatbush/East Flatbush in Brooklyn? That one comes up in my results a lot when I look at what my options will probably be.
Some parts of Flatbush are ok, but as a newcomer I think you should avoid it, unless you're talking about Ditmas Park, which is part of Flatbush. East Flatbush is worse than Flatbush, as far as I know.
If you are looking at Brooklyn, you'd be better off looking further out in neighborhoods that are not hip but that are nice, safe and subway accessible. With the exception of Bay Ridge, I am not familiar with all neighborhoods, but they've been mentioned on this board. Search for Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Gravesend.
Some people are busy and won't mind you working from home. Why not live on a month-to-month agreement and get a feel for the city? That way you can see how you feel about your budget and you'll have time to look for a deal. 37K won't get you far, but you already knew that. I'd almost suggest a side job to pull in another 10-20K. If you could manage it that would greatly open up your options. Forest Hills is worth checking out. I'll occasionally see studios for $900-1000 there. But at that price a lot of them are in basements. That's something you'll have to ask yourself if you can tolerate. Astoria is good as well but pricey- sometimes I see studios for a bit more there, like 1200 min. Sunnyside is also nice and hasn't been completely discovered yet. Also, consider Parkchester. They have about a 37K minimum income requirement so you'd most likely qualify with them.

Forest Hills is nice and several subway lines are nearby. There is also some stores by the 71st Ave-Continental Ave station.
