Note the distinctive building in the left background; that's the Camelot Apartments at 45th and Eighth. That confirms that this is Eighth Avenue facing uptown, and below 45th. My best guess would be that it's on the block occupied by the Westin today, but one block further up is also a possibility.
8th ave between 47-48th streets. this is in front of what is now the NY Tourbus station and a Duane Reade Pharmacy. this was the block where Travis met Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver
the guy wearing the brim hat--pimp? street activity looks very conspicuous and heavy. even in the early 90's before the cleanup you never saw pimps brazenly standing mid street. this had to have been prior to 1994 because the Hollywood Twin Cinema closed that year
8th ave between 42-44th or between 47-48th--was the "street action" any "safer" in the upper 40's or was it pretty much the same as by 42nd street? in otherwords, were you as likely to be harrassed or victimized up by 48th street as you were down by 42nd street?
Found a fuller picture on Leland Bobbe's site. Pins it down to the east side of Eighth Avenue just north of 43rd. There's a Starbucks there now. I'm guessing the McDonalds was the former House of Paradise, and the bar is now the Eighth Avenue Gift Shop. Still can't say for sure the name of the bar.
Hmm, New York Songlines disagrees, and puts it where I originally thought it was, south of 43rd where the Westin is. They're probably right. According to them, 674 Eighth Avenue was indeed a Blarney Stone.
wow i always knew the Blarney Stone at 795 8th just north of 48th street (now it's The Social Bar). I miss the old Blarneys especially the hotplates. last one i was in was on Fulton Street in 2009.
