Currently I am a south norwalk resident. I commute to black rock (fairfield, ct)
My wife recently signed a 1 year contract in Bridgewater NJ, so looks like we might have to move.
The half way point appears to be just at the Lincoln tunnel in the city. Although we were thinking of her renting an apartment in NJ, its going to be difficult to be apart on all days other than weekends, so the thought was to rent a place in midtown (west) and drive...

has anyone done such a long reverse commute (midtown to fairfield and midtown to bridgewater/sommerville NJ ? (both of us typically start working at 7-8am and are done by 5)? any thoughts or ideas?

input is appreciated.

J

There is no such thing as a "reverse commute" around NYC,NJ and Ct.

That would suck. Honestly. Driving would be a nightmare. To get to Fairfield your best bet would probably be the metro north- looks like there's a 6:23am train out of Grand Central that gets you to Fairfield at 7:44am. You could reasonably live in midtown west and take the shuttle from times square to Grand Central. Total commute would probably be an an hour and a half to an hour and 45 mins each way though. A monthly ticket for that trip on the metro north is $358. Not sure if there's public transportation for the NJ trip, but it's probably going to be a good long drive going either direction in the AM.

Sure there is, mostly in the morning. I live in Manhattan and used to work in Newark. At 7 or 8 am I could speed through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnels while passing everyone that was trying to get into the city, who were barely inching along.

Token,
Your situation is awful.

I would pick either Bridgewater or Fairfield and thus only one of you needs to have a suicidal commute. The person without the commute would have dinner on the table and an ice cold martini ready when the crazed one gets home cursing and spluttering..

Boy, any long commute sucks but sticking New York City right in the middle of it is just awful. I had a commute for a few weeks between Jersey City and Fairfield...unbearable.

Bridgewater's a large area, though. If it's near the train station, that's fine, but if it's say, at an office park along Route 206, that would require a transfer to an infrequent shuttle bus, which makes for a hard commute considering you already had to transfer once at Newark.

For what it's worth, the #114 bus has a trip to the Bridgewater Mall that leaves the PABT at 6:20, and arrives at the mall at 8:15AM. Though the OP might feel uncomfortable about depending on that one bus to get to work on time (assuming 8:15AM is even early enough).

Bridgewater NJ is far even from NYC. You are looking at 2.5hrs from CT one way.

Your best bet is to move somewhere in Central NJ where there is good train stop into NYC and less than 25 mi from Bridgewater. Westfield area and surrounding is where I would look.

OP for one year you may have to tough it out and have your wife get a crash pad near her job. Although you must think what if her job lasts longer, then what? I knew a good amount of married people who lived out of nyc, one worked near home the other in the city so they city person would get a crash pad for the week days and join their spouse on the weekends. Sadly none of these marriages are any longer.
