The Dump (euphemistically called the recycling station) that will handle thousands of tons of garbage daily with hundreds of huge garbage trucks shuttling though the neighborhood that is being proposed/built next to the only sizeable playground on the Upper East Side has become a campaign issue.
Seems the Democratic candidates that are FOR the Dump include Quinn and De Blasio. Those who have indicated they want it stopped/shut are Weiner and Thompson.
Anyone living on the UES should consider this issue carefully.
The UES, which has the largest population density in the City has the lowest density of parkland and playgrounds.
Strong possibility that this dump will be located in South Bronx. Usually all crap that Manhattan don't want in their backyard is erected in Port Morris, Mott Haven...and of course Hunts Point.

Doesn't matter.DeBlasio is going to win and most UES'ers will vote for Lhota anyway.
East siders always seem to want their trash trucked into someone else's neighborhood.
The city is going all out with these transfer stations building new ones and refurbishing some older ones. They figure to save money this way but I agree with you, that is an odd spot. I have dumped trucks all over this city and in Jersey, but never such a nice spot on the UES
It will not go to the Southern Bronx...the UES does not have to have it..but it WILL be in some other part of Manhattan. Every borough is handling their own garbage...and Manhattan is no exception. So move it from the UES..who cares....but it will find a home somewhere in Manhattan. And that's reality.
FYI it is not an odd spot..it is on a major artery, with access to easy shipping route over water, as well as easy access to the GWB if needed. It is in fact a great spot..which is why it was chosen...it was not an accident but a well thought out choice.

Odd spot because of the UES location, the hardcore nimbys. Logistically it is 100% ideal, you are correct. This will probably be the only time I will ever agree with you about anything, feels very strange and I dont like it.
Don't worry I am sure it will never happen again. They are in fact hardcore NIMBYS but they have already lost the case...the only person that can save them is the next Mayor, and DeBlasio has already signed off on the deal (campaigned on it). They are SOL.
But it has has Central Park right next door, so you're not exactly deprived of parkspace.
East End Avenue doesn't have Central park any more than Riverside Drive does, or Herald Square or 125th Street for that matter.
It will be immediately behind Asphalt Green, with trucks routed THROUGH the playground and just a couple blocks North of Carl Schurz Park (Gracie Mansion.)
Historically, even the dopiest little burgs tried to locate their dumps outside of town. New York instead chooses a tiny remaining sliver of green playground to destroy. A final legacy of the last 85 years of the schytty Bloomberg Administration.
I DO hope somebody has the good sense to rename it the BLOOMBERG MEMORIAL DUMP.
Kefir your anger is incredibly misplaced. How about you weep for the 1 mile radius along the Southern Bronx waterfront that has 10 "Dumps" (waste transfer stations)! How about you shed a tear for Staten Island which was the actual dump for all of NYC for 50 years...so large in fact it could be seen from space!
But no..you choose to protest 1 waste transfer station going in 1 neighborhood in all of Manhattan? Really? But hey...it's the UES..it is special because, well...it is...so it could not possibly go there..think of THEIR kids...think of THEIR parks....think of THEIR quality of life. THEY are what matter..at least according to Kefir who neither lives there nor is wanted there because HE is NOT one of THEM. The delicious irony.
