Plenty of people do not know much about the history of the South Bronx. If you don't know anything about the south Bronx historically and why is it just bad or dangerous, it's best to refrain from commenting. The south Bronx has been a poor area and with high crime since the 1920s. Prior to the 1920s the area known as the south Bronx like Mott Haven was home to professionals like judges and doctors. Alexander Avenue was known as the Irish 5th Avenue and doctors row. Plenty of Jews who made it out of the heavily Jewish ghetto called the lower east side moved up to the lower Grand concourse into art deco apartments. What began to ruin the South Bronx was prohibition which saw an increase of crime, and the great depression which saw in an increase of poverty. Also slums had already existed in the South Bronx prior to the white flight. World war 2 saw plenty of young men in the area sent overseas which probably helped bring down crime. 1950s South Bronx was full of baldies greaser gangs. Historically for nearly a 100 years South Bronx has been a rough place regardless of ethnic group or racial type , but things seem to have improve in recent years. It's always good but also beneficial to understand the history of the area you live.
