back in 1998 at my old place i will never forget i got up to go to the bathroom and a mouse ran right under my foot, i ran and crashed into the wall and bloodied my knee. the damn thing ran into my closet and spent hours chewing. i was so petrified from the noise i fled the apartment and had breakfast in the local coffee shop. when i returned, no more noise. i asked my neighbor to accompany me while i opened up the closet to see if it was still there but it apparently chewed its way out. he was like "uh it would have left by now you won;t see it". my neighbors viewed this as a routine thing and part of city living. i can't recall one tenant in my old place that got excited over this kind of thing...
I am lucky I have never had a mouse and I have lived in big buildings in the past too. I have always kept at least one cat because I love pets. Even when I was in a building having a mouse problem, when the exterminator knocked on my door asking if I had mice, I said no and he said, "Do you have a cat?" Unless the infestation is severe and their numbers are so high as to give the sense of bravery in a mob, I think the scent of cat really keeps them away and makes them afraid to dare forage for food in an apartment where they sense cats. And if it's a severe infestation and they do dare to come in, the cats will chase and/or kill them.
when i used to rent a room in a private house in Delaware the attic apt was infested with mice. there were reports that there were once mice in my room before i moved there (tho i never saw any) so compared to that my problem is not too bad, i just gotta keep thinking about that...
the ext. asked me if i had mice i told him no because i figured all he'd do is put down pellets i don't want them dying in a place i can't get to. what can they really do about mice?

I am not sure of their routines as I never used one. I agree with you about dying in a place you cannot get to ... what if a mouse dies in the walls and you can smell it decaying and you cannot remove the body ... yuck!
if it died behind the stove the super would have to disconnect the stove gas line and then pull back the stove--yuck yuck!! i keep spraying a stream of peppermint/cypress/water/salt solution every so often in the hopes it will deter them

I don't think that is strong enough of a deterrent and may be an old wives' tail anyway.
I think you should try what I looked up in post #12.
Spray a teeny tiny bit of skunk urine right on one of their entry holes or right at the spot you saw that one mouse. I would think "evidence" like that of one of their natural predators would freak them out and they would avoid your apartment!
how a bout a sign that says "Mickey--there are no Minnie's to breed with here--please look elsewhere for love"!!!
