My husband is currently unemployed, with a pre-existing condition. Months ago we had to drop his COBRA coverage because it was nearly $600/month so now he has horrible "catastrophic" insurance for $200/month. Under ObamaCare, he will be able to get "normal" coverage for probably around $200, $400 less than what he was paying before for the same coverage. Sorry, but I see no downside to this as far as we are concerned.
And I totally agree that if you opt out and decide to just to pay the fine, then you get nothing if something happens. You want to gamble, fine but I'm not paying for it when you lose.
In your situation, one would have to be nuts to gamble. Glad to hear that your family benefit from OBCare.
Leoliu, sounds like you believe that the federal government does not have a right to force individuals to purchase a product. I agree and its unconstitutional. Individual states can (i.e. car insurance), but if you don't like it you can always move to another state.
Unfortunately Judge Roberts intrepeted Obama care as a tax, so the government can now force you to buy anything. Its funny how Obama stated it was not a tax, and then it is a tax. Cluster F.
I find it funny that people can be so short sighted until things happen to them. Like MS. Which afflicts suddenly many healthy, young people. That is a chronic disease that will require expensive, long term care. Neurological diseases, which are very common, don't give a hoot about how thin you are, how many fruits and veggies you eat, and how many miles you can run. You just wake up one day and your nerves are on the fritz.
I used to think "to hell with it, I'm young. There are more important things to think about". That was until I got out of the car one day and I had difficulty uncrossing my legs. My entire left side was fatigued. That, my friends, was the start of a medical journey. Sorry, but health insurance to me is just as important as people's precious savings, retirement accounts, whatever. If I didn't have my employer plan, I probably wouldn't have access to 5 MRIs. I would've been allowed maybe 1, and the co-pay would have been horrendous. The above poster is right...Obamacare may or may not be the answer, but it's a help to all of the uninsured who want to be insured but can't. If you don't want it, pay the fine and opt out. Gamble with your own life.
Some will gain and some will lose, but all have to participate. If I were to participate on my own, I would rather buy it instead of paying the fine, which is 1% of your income in the first year then goes up to ~3% from 2015.

But they will get something. That's what people like leoliu are gambling on and they win, taxpayers lose as usual. Instead of paying nothing they will beoutch and moan about paying the fine and if something happens they will go the ER, not pay the bill, and we will be stuck with the bill as usual. They're just mad there is a fine now. My advice to them is work off the books and avoid fine altogether like illegal aliens do. Might as well go all out with the dirtbag lifestyle you are living.

That must have been really scary! Imagine how much more scary it would have been if you didn't have insurance!
I am not saying I am a big fan of the Obamacare plan. I rather find it more of a sellout to Big Pharma (captive customers by law) rather than the "socialist program" some people biotch and moan about. But I do understand the importance of access to healthcare for people.
the affordable health care act is designed to insure the u.s. government from bankrupting itself by paying all the doctor's bills that you can't afford to pay.
I have a friend that is a doctor in the rural Midwest a couple of hours outside of Chicago. She is wealthy (born rich). She always jokes that she should have went to veterinarian school instead of medical school because people will pay for medical care for their animals before they will pay for medical care for themselves.
She is a republican and campaigned for Obama because she wanted Obamacare for the positive reasons stated in this thread.
Once people that live in these areas that make do without medical care experience Obamacare and the fact that they can actually see a doctor not only when they are sick but to prevent illness there will be no turning back for the average person.
The business owners that are scared, selfish and greedy will adjust, and it is absolutely too late for scare tactics.

Agree, and HOPING it is too late for scare tactics to work.
I am sure those who feel they stand to lose have been investigating the loopholes for some time now.
