I'm someone who basically lived my childhood to adult life in Brooklyn, Bedstuy to be exact. I spent most of my life as a child in the 90's going to these spot's to buy the many treats that kids of that era loved. The stores were always known for blasting the many sounds of Puerto Rican or Dominican music, which as a child i use to make fun of, but then appreciating as an adult.
One of the wonderful things about these stores were the prices of products. compare to today's price of things, thanks to severe inflation. One of the main appeal to these stores were the owners, who were friendly and funny as well.
I just finally come to a realization that theirs not as many bodegas around as there use to be. Where i live their are about three stores, and out of the there, one is own by a Dominican guy, the rest by Arabic-Muslims.
What is happening to these owners of Bodegas, if anyone know?
They're in the Bronx!! Where I am in Bedford Park, I'd estimate that about half are Dominican, and the other half from the middle east. I think rising rents are a problem with bodegas in general though. I was in Inwood Hill Park yesterday with my daughter, and saw that the only bodega close to the north end of the park had been replaced by a restaurant. That neighborhood has almost no bodgas now. It's really inconvenient.
Combination of rising rents and bad economy, I'd imagine. In more upscale neighborhoods there are still tons of 24 hour corner stores, though many may be too upscale to be called bodegas anymore.
same thing that's happening to the rest of the mom & pop stores in new york.
they're all becoming dinosaurs like the rest of us; a symbol of the past
like the twin towers.
