I absolutely don't mind a police car pass by my house every fifteen minutes.

I don't either do nothing wrong. But still a police car driving slowly on a desolate, rutted, ratty street eyeing me makes me nervous. They have the tools to do whatever with you if they so choose. Remember, there are also disturbed individuals within the police force. If i was a woman i would also feel nervous encountering police car on a desolate street.

As for NYFD i have only good things to say. They arriwed pretty fast when my neighbors couch caught fire. A few minutes more and the whole apt might have gone up in flames or even worse the whole 6 story tenement like back in the 70's.

I would feel relieved knowing I'm safe walking home that day/night. Thugs usually hide like cockroaches
when cops are around. There is no catch 22 here, if your neighborhood is a low crime area, police presence
will only make it safer. If it's a high crime area, still same result if more police presence on the blocks.
Agree, we have seen more police presence around the 127th subway exit and everyone is happy about it.
I certainly feel much safer at night. There is a restaurant right there but it has done little to discourage the drug dealing and loitering.

This may well depend on what demographic the person being asked falls into.

If the person is caucasian, older and/or wealthier, a highly visible police presence may well make them feel safer. They know that they are not viewed by police as members of a suspect population, and generally haven't been treated as such by police.

But person being asked is young, poorer and black or Latino, they may see it very differently. People in this group know police view them as suspects, and most have been subject to harassment and intimidation by police based on that view.

Yes, because we all know that whites do not commit any crimes.

But that's the point. Generally speaking, whites are only targeted by police once they have already committed crimes. Blacks and Latinos are targeted by police whether or not they have committed crimes.

Not at all necessarily true.
Funny how people say those things.
