Don't you have to fill out some type of registration to buy pepper spray in NY? A friend of mine went to a police equipment shop yesterday and bought a can "off the rack" with no questions asked. If one uses pepper spray to ward off an attack, will the police check to see if it's registered in some way? Is there a way to register after purchase that you are carrying it?
total bs that they make you register it, im guessing the gun shop hands over the forms to the local precinct to see if you are some kind of felon .
my advice just order it off amazon or just purchase it upstate. only a few places carry it in nyc .
pepper spray IMO is not a good self defense tool anyway, most people buy it and give it to there wives /girlfriend and not even show them how to use it of even give a test spray, ends up in the bottom of there purse and cant access it in time. then you have to factor in the elements like wind rain etc.
negligence on training and lack of education on on pepper spray.
But if you happen to get it properly from the right distant in the eyes it's quite effective. Burns like hell even worse if the person happens to be allergic to pepper.
Don't they sell it to everyone at the info in National and State Parks etc. in case of Grizzly and Black Bear attacks?
They use canisters that are big. They have easily found correctly oriented triggers. They are a far cry from manipulating those little pocket toys under stress with no fine motor skills left.
one of the problems with deploying pepper spray or any weapon is the fact attacks are usually without warning, swift and powerful.
there is generally no time at all to even realize what is happening.
attackers watch you ,you don't watch them.
getting hit unexpectedly by a sizeable attacker will not even give you time to deploy anything ,especially something that has to be deployed , oriented correctly , require fine motor skills to press ,the wind blowing in the right direction, and the right point of aim.
know what the odds of being able to pull off all of the above is while under attack? less than 1%.
even stun guns can be a bad choice. it takes at least 5 seconds for a stun gun to take effect.
an attacker with a gun or knife can fire off many rounds in 5 seconds or do quite a bit of slashing.
anyone who has taken the course by massad ayoob at lethal force institute has to fire off 5 rounds in 5 seconds at a target while you are hit with a stun gun just to pass.
it is quite easy to get those rounds off before the stun gun takes control..
you can carry these 2nd tier weapons but realize the chances of you deploying them succesfuly are quite small.

I disagree that most attacks are without warning and that you don't realize what's happening. It's more like you are walking in a deserted subway or on an empty street and you see some suspicious characters or feel you are being followed. I'd rather have mace on me than depend on the mercy of some criminal that his intent is only to rob me. It's not rocket science to use a small canister of mace.
You can disagree all you want but studies by lethal force institute who track crime events and study the finite details say differently.
Links? And mace is not lethal, if the criminal wrestles it from you he is not going to kill you with it.
