We are relocating from Australia, and really like the sound of forest hills, however we have seen on the map that it seems to be between 2 major airports. Could anyone tell me if there is a lot of air traffic noise? Low flying planes etc?
It seems to me that there's SO much air traffic in NYC that you really can't escape it completely
Forest Hills may be spared some of the worst, because one of the two major approaches to La Guardia is over Elmhurst, further to the west (the other approach is over the Bronx). There are threads on the Long Island board that talk about aircraft noise, but that is more from the approach to JFK, but you might want to check there.
Try searching google for something like "noise map" or "noise contour map" for each airport. It may help give you an idea of what areas tend to be noisiest.
I notice in satellite view, in line with one of the LaGuardia runways, there is a path of destruction through Jackson Heights. A bunch of empty blocks. Must be pretty bad there!
I would think 3 months would be enough time to hear a plane, though sometimes there are runway closures and construction that can alter the normal flight paths. Forest Hills has no aircraft noise whatsoever. LGA runway 13 departures have a procedural turn that keeps traffic over Flushing meadow park then a banking turn east of Forest Hills. Runway 31 arrivals use a visual approach that directs traffic over the LIE then over the park over Sheas Stadium then over the field. The other runways are nowhere near Forest Hills
JFK traffic is routed mostly over the water or Long Island far away from Forest Hills. The closest traffic is parkway visual runway 13R/L arrivals that fly over the Belt Parkway but this is 6 miles south of Forest Hills. Forest Hills seems to be in a buffer zone between the two airports and tender ears are spared.
Yes it can be bad here in Nassau with the JFK approaches, this morning it was non-stop Jet Noise for a couple of hours. Sometimes it's in the evening, sometimes morning. It often feels like I live near an airport its so bad at times. The problem is JFK inbound flights all loop in over Nassau, usually circling then coming in over SE Nassau, following up Rt.135, then heading back west between Old Country Road and 25A.
They fly low too. The noise is probably less in Forest Hills than it is here.
I think it depends where exactly you live in Forest Hills. Some parts of Forest Hills have a bit more air traffic noise but it isn't too serious in general. Also late at night you don't have noise from La Guardia as there are flight restrictions. (I believe planes normally don't take off or land between 11PM until 6AM daily.)

I'm not so sure about that now. It depends on which part of Forest Hills. From 67th Ave. area to the west, there are already frequent low flying planes. It seems to be the edge of the whole flight path in Rego Park. I've seen planes right above 64th Ave. However, if you're close to the 71st Ave and the east to that, it's quite immune to aircraft noise.
I hate La Guardia, because of its location, we here in southwestern Brooklyn have planes flying over entire Brooklyn yo get to La Guardia, every 30 seconds.
Funny though when the wind blows a certain way we hear nothing, then another way, it becomes maddening.
Just another thing to look out for when apartment or house hunting...
