everything we do has risk something will go wrong. the smart folks try to put
odds on their side by pushing the odds more into their favor.
And many go overboard for no good reason. And of course for them, there is always a Hummer with tires that will haul timber in the Arctic.
You don't need the same thing on Lexington Avenue that you might want in downtown Falluja. (Suppose there's a drive-by and you aren't in something bullet-proof?)

Well the vehicle has to fit the terrain. But one thing i would never screw with is tires. When my safety and the safety of my family is at risk i want the proper tires for the application.

You may not ,but a word to the wise is don't screw with tires if you are doing winter driving. just because you got away with something so far does not mean you will avoid something in the future that could have been avoided and avoided almost for free..

Thanks everyone for your advice. As for the winter tires in warmer climates - will they be OK when driving through, say, California where the winter temperature is ~65 degrees with sunshine? I'm sure the winter tires will do wonders once I hit snow, but until I hit the Sierras will the tires wear too much? Thanks again for all your help!

the winter tires wear the sticky coating faster above 40% but on a trip like this it won't do much.

all the manufacturers offer performance snows. these are in the middle between an all season and a full blown winter tire.

they wear better on dry roads yet retain full flexibilty at cold temperatures.

they handle better at highway speed ,are quieter and get better gas milage .

i use these type as i never needed a full blown snow tire with my awd and four wheel drive vehicles.

the difference in performance over an all season tire is night and day with the performance snows. it increases from there as well when you go to the full blown winter tire. there is an upgrade in performance in deep snow and ice when going to the full snow over the performance snow tire.
i have seen these tested on ice and they are pretty remarkable..

i use these
