I don't know if I could share a specific experience with you that would illustrate this concept, it is more the general ambience I feel when going out to eat, going to see live music, etc. It seems like there is an element of self importance in the air that is more pronounced than most other cities, excluding San Francisco, LA, and maybe Boston. I live in Seattle and it certainly has pretentious elements but it is much more tempered.
I feel like people think they live in the cultural capital of the world and if they got a job there they must be the pick of the litter. It is a dog eat dog mentality up there and people must get that way in order to survive. Those that appear more reserved, unassuming and compassionate are sure to get the shaft.
Probably because a lot of people ride NYC so hard. Also, it has a reputation of being one of the greatest, if not greatest, city in the world (obviously can be argued, I personally wouldn't say it is but that's because I haven't really traveled yet). Thus, some in general that live here, not just young professionals, feel the need to boost their ego and become pretentious. Mainly, it is because of the fact that NYC is looked up to by a LOT of people.. NYC's section in this forum is one example of this.

I have traveled a bit, and I can tell you that NYC is interesting, but far from being the greatest among the world cities imo.

Not disagreeing, what what is the greatest to you? Just curious. I've been to Barcelona to Siam Reap to Paris, Rome, Tokyo, etc. I may be biased since NYC has always been my home.
And to OP, it would help if you gave examples of what you meant.. I would imagine most of the experiences are with young people not from New York that are feeling good about themselves for being here and "living their dream."
NYC has a big mythology as the greatest city. Lots of songs like NY NY - "if I can make it there I'll
make it anywhere" "A number 1, king of the hill, top of the heap".
Empire State of Mind - "concrete jungle where dreams are made from there's nothing you can't do in NY"
When you live here you hear greatest city in the world all the time. It's pounded into you growing up that you live in the greatest city in the world. I think it appeals to people's insecurities. People here sometimes have a big attitude of being better than people in other places just because they were born here. Most New Yorkers have at least a touch of that attitude in the back of their mind.
You can find that sort of attitude on a smaller scale in the suburbs where people from some town think they're better than the people from the next town. Maybe its just human nature to build yourself up and put others down.
Think I know the answer but I'd like to hear from people that live there/spent extensive time in the city.
I agree with you but I also know of examples I came across from. Someone had pointed out that a yuppie im gentry Brooklyn said that people who live in South Brooklyn are neanderthals. I came across many transplants say stupid and silly things. Like onetime there was a shootout near 12, and a SF transplant said oh gosh Im gonna die. Another comment from another Transplant. The reason why New Yorkers dont enjoy college football is because most New Yorkers do not go to college. Another guy who is from Memphis, he worked in thr Bronx and laughed at Black people in the projects chilling with iphones anf expensive air jordans, but where he comes from is far worse than any Bronx hood, even more worse than Mott Haven which super mario claims as the worst area in America. Over heard two oh gosh like yah white women, one of the woman was persuading her friend to cheat on her boyfriend by stating its not considered cheating if he finds out. problem is this, yuppie transplants have superioity complex which comes from their parents, everyone gets a trophy, oh your the best, self entitled millennial, narcissist. Also plenty of high self esteem and self worth from going to a Grade A college and feel culturally superior over the masses.

For the record, I would rather have a drink with someone who is considered working class or even a "Neanderthal," by a yuppie elite rather than any of the high rolling *******s from prestigious schools in the northeast, that now work as bankers or financial analysts in midtown manhattan and have their noses up their a$$es.
While it could be that the professionals are pretentious, the flip side of it is what if they aren't? Those would good educations can get jobs around the world, and a lot of people in NY's professional class do indeed go wherever they get good opportunities.
That doesn't make them jerks. I think some of the lower classes here have inferiority complexes and assume all the people who appear to be well off must be mean. That isn't necessarily the case.
